  241. About the Author

Kate had blushed to the roots of her hair but that only caused Sean to grin mischievously at his sister and brother-in-law. Rigg remembered very clearly what it was like to be 14 and gave his young brother-in-law a stern look.

Now it was December twenty-third and the four of them were putting on wraps to leave for the Taylors.

I wont have any trouble being thankful this year.

About what? Kate responded to her husbands cryptic remark.

Mom has us share every year what were thankful for.

And what will you say? Kate asked and slipped her arms around her husbands large frame.

Well, that weve had plenty of rain for the crops, of course.

Of course, Kate agreed, and smiled into his eyes.

Ah, Kate-love, Rigg sighed, youre awfully nice to have around.

And Ill stay around too, just as long as you keep calling me that. Kaitlin sealed her words with a kiss.

The rain has stopped; whats holding them up? Sean called to Marcail from the porch.

The usual, Sean, Marcail stated in calm logic. Just the usual.

Prologue

Santa Rosa, California
December 1871

Jeffrey Taylor tiptoed up the back stairway of his house in stocking feet. His parents and brothers were all asleep and he stepped carefully along the upstairs hallway to avoid the reliable creaks and groans of the hardwood floor.

Once in his bedroom he lit the lantern and undressed for bed. The sights and sounds from the Christmas party he had just attended came back to him. Jeff knew everyone there, had grown up with most of them. They had laughed, sang, played games, and eaten for hours. And then the hostess face, Sylvia Weber, swam before his eyes.

Whats the matter with you tonight, Jeff? You havent been very attentive this evening. Her voice was irritated and Jeff was quick to apologize.

Im sorry, I must be a little tired.

Ill forgive you, Sylvia said with a teasing light in her eyes, if you come over right now and have one of these desserts I made.

Jeff had gone, telling himself to perk up, but Sylvia was right; he had been distracted the whole evening. It was almost a relief to leave.
