- About the Author
The last word was said on a sob and Kate buried her face against Marcails hair. Her body shook and Sean went to join his sisters. They sat huddled together crying and talking in soft Hawaiian. The Taylors stayed on the porch, not intruding, but showing concern with their presence.
Rigg thanked God for their emotional display. He knew from talking to Sean that with their busy schedules and uncertain future, this family hadnt taken time to discuss their mothers deathat least not since arriving in town.
I cant believe shes really gone. I mean, I know that well see her again but I want to see her now. The words were Seans and Kaitlin felt Marcail shudder against her. She didnt want to stifle their grief but it did no good to concentrate solely on their mothers absence.
At least we know we will see her. Kates voice was choked as she tried to stop crying. And shes not suffering anymore like she did with the tuberculosis. I read that it could have gone on for years. God was merciful to take her so quickly.
Kates words, after a time, had the desired effect and the childrens conversation turned to their fatherhow he was and when they would see him again. The tears eventually stopped and Kate prayed aloud for their Father. She asked God to deliver their letters to him safely and to let them hear soon how he was doing.
The evening was growing long and Kate sent Marcail to have her bath. Rigg and Sean were getting ready to leave when Kate turned to May and Bill with a question.
I really appreciate the way you let us come every weekend and how at home you make us feel. But this is still your house so dont be afraid to say no to the question I want to ask you.
Bill and May looked at one another and then back at Kaitlin.
May I invite Mr. Parker and Joey to our fish dinner tomorrow night?

The only sound was the evening breeze rustling the leaves. Nate, Gil and Jeff were all finished with their baths, so the only person not staring at Kate was Marcail, who was still in the bathtub.
Kaitlins face began to heat and she was about to apologize for her question but instead her chin came out with steel determination.
Like Ive said, youve always made us feel so comfortable and I dont want to take advantage of that. Ive prayed about inviting Mr. Parker to my little house in town . . . Kate halted when Rigg came abruptly to his feet.
