E: Because if I could experience them raw, I wouldn’t want to come back to this world. It wouldn’t make sense to go on living. I think that was her problem too. I told her not to go back, but she just kept going to the concerts. Interesting, you know. If you had been to one, you would know when they played next. You would just feel. I don’t think she went abroad.
B. Where did she go?
E: I think she’s still here. I think she’s one with the town. I think she’s just beyond.
B: Beyond . . .
E: Do you want to hear it? The melody?
B: Yes.
E: Come to bed.
B: I don’t have money on me.
E: I don’t care. You deserve it. You understand . . . Come.
(at this point it’s as if the tape got damaged, there is nothing but static noise)
B: My God. My God.
E: Do you want more?
B: Yes! Show me!
(static noise again)
E: Take off your clothes!
(static noise from this point until the end of the recording)
This was when Balázs decided to dedicate his book to Fogtown. He cared about nothing but finding the band. He didn’t tell anyone about what happened at Eszter’s flat. Nobody would have believed him, and he couldn’t have explained it either. He reached out to Eszter multiple times, but the woman didn’t want to meet him again. She said it was different for her with Balázs and refused to meet him again. She said she didn’t want to go down the path Balázs had started on, but if they were to meet again, she would.
Balázs nearly went mad because of this. He found just what he had been looking for with her, or something very much like it. For those minutes, it was like he wasn’t himself. For a moment, he turned into someone he always wanted to be. The worst thing about it was that he couldn’t even remember clearly what had happened. He wasn’t even sure whether he had slept with Eszter, and if he had, whether it lasted for minutes or hours. He only recalled the melody, but he didn’t have a clear recollection of that either.
