…
B: Have you heard of a band called Fogtown?
M: You bet I have! My girlfriend was crazy about them. My ex. She was the most beautiful girl, but back at the time I dumped her without thinking.
B: Why?
M: First of all, we weren’t really a good match, I mean . . . you know. The band members and my buddies weren’t exactly happy that . . . you know, that she had Hebrew ancestors. It’s really embarrassing to think about it now, I guess I was pretty stupid back then, and my friends were a bad influence on me . . . But that’s not the real reason why I dumped her, I mean we could have just denied the whole thing . . . she didn’t have a big nose or anything like that, my friends would never have known. And she really wanted it, us being together, she was so much in love with me.
B: I see . . .
M: Anyway. The point is that she would talk about this goddamn band all the time. That we really had to go see one of their shows. That she’d heard something of theirs, or she was at a rehearsal, or her girlfriend was at a rehearsal, whatever, but that we had to go to a concert right away, because it was flaming hot shit, okay? Only there never was any concert at all. No matter how eagerly I searched for them, there was nothing. Nowhere. Only the rumor that there would be a show soon, or there had been one just last Sunday, or something. It was like chasing a shadow. Then I realized: there’s no such band at all. They spread word of it as if it existed, when in fact it didn’t. Just to fool people, you know. Pulling our legs. And my girlfriend got fooled. She said she had been to a party, but I know that she hadn’t been, because that band didn’t perform. Never. It didn’t even exist, all right? So I got fed up, and I dumped her. Okay, so I actually dumped her because of that, that’s what you should write down, all right? I still feel like barfing when I hear that goddamn name. Fog-fucking-town!
After this, Balázs was driven by the sole purpose of finding proof of Fogtown’s existence. He looked all over to find the one-time girlfriend; both the girl and her family were gone. He managed to track down a friend of this girl. To Balázs’ great surprise, he recognized her: they had attended the same high school, but she was two years his senior.
