“I don’t know what we’re going to do with you.” She took her wallet out of her pants. “Here’s some money,” she said, and as I struggled into my skirt, I saw that she was giving me two hundred dollars. “Get yourself some new stockings. And keep the change. Consider it a disability payment—I’m assuming you might have some trouble sitting down for the next two days.”
I took the money and smiled back. My first day at work was certainly turning out nicely.
“I hope to see you again after lunch,” Jane said. “I think we could work very well together.”
“I’d like to come back,” I said. “And I’m sure you’ll do everything you can to see that I do.”
Jane looked puzzled at first, then cleared her throat. “Hm, well, yes, certainly, of course. It’s clear that we should be paying you far more than the initial salary we settled on. You’re so much more qualified than your résumé suggested. I’ll have the new contract drawn up and you can sign it when you get back. How does that sound?”
“Beautiful,” I said.
And then I took a very, very long lunch.
SERENA MOLOCH
on “Casting Couch,” first published in Best American Erotica in 2000
I think Susie and her bossy, flattering solicitation letter got me writing this story. I didn’t start with an inspiration, but with a deadline.
Once I started, it flowed easily, and I wrote it faster than any story I’d composed before. I decided in advance that I wanted two points of view, from a top and a bottom, someone in the know and someone who’s unaware.
Comedy is the highest art and, like porn, perpetually undervalued. I liked writing a story that worked the way fantasy does—switching points of view, starting and dropping story lines and scenes.
The most hilarious thing about “Casting Couch” is that a couple of years after I wrote it, I fell in love, and early in the relationship I decided to tell my girlfriend about my porn stories. It turned out that earlier that week, she’d been reading BAE and had jerked off to my story! Without knowing that she was already having sex with its author! It was incredible confirmation of my powers as a pornographer and of the chemistry between us.
