Brython was preparing to start his dictation. To compose his thoughts, he examined the garish orange bed-sheet that clung to the features of the dead man. It was stuck down in two places with what looked like blackish glue; and the side nearest him had been soaked through by the sticky puddle beneath. He nodded grimly and, his quarterdeck voice ringing out clear and powerful, he began, ‘The Daily Beast’s fight-back in the war against Islamic terror has claimed its first casualty…’

Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I owe a debt of gratitude to my agent Anna Webber. Also to the team at Head of Zeus: Neil Belton, Lauren Atherton, Suzanne Sangster, Blake Brooks and, through them, Adrian McLaughlin and Monica Hope. Several people read and commented on ideas and drafts, especially Cordelia Jenkins, Paul Pickering, Peter Leggatt, Kate Rundell and Simon Akam. One person has read more of my writing and offered more help than anyone else: Candia McWilliam. I also owe much to my colleagues in the newsrooms I’ve worked in and hope they enjoy this. Lastly, I didn’t know Stella Powell-Jones when I was writing this book, but I’m thankful I know her now.

About Apollo

The Apollo list reflects in various ways the extremity of our time, and the ways in which novelists responded to the vertiginous changes that the world went through as the great empires declined, relations between men and women were transformed and formerly subject peoples found their voice.

Selected by the distinguished critic, poet and editor Michael Schmidt, in conjunction with Neil Belton, editorial director at Head of Zeus, Apollo makes great forgotten works of fiction available to a new generation of readers. Apollo will challenge the established canon and surprise and move readers with its choice of books.
