Still thoroughly unsettled by the conversation over breakfast, she would have done anything to avoid more close contact with him, but as this was the first real interest he’d shown in Daisy she didn’t want to reject his offer.
It would be fine, she told herself firmly as she carried Daisy out to the car.
He hadn’t meant anything by his comments.
He’d just been teasing her.
She knew for a fact that she wasn’t his type. And he certainly wasn’t hers.
She had absolutely nothing to worry about.
* * *
Three hours later Alex handed over his credit card with a satisfied smile.
At least now it couldn’t be said that Daisy didn’t have toys.
‘Thank you, Dr Westerling,’ the assistant said smoothly, eyeing the enormous bill with the smug satisfaction of someone who received a bonus on sales. ‘Will there be anything else?’
Anything else?
Alex flashed him a look of intense irritation and refrained from pointing out that he’d already bought half the shop. He pocketed his credit card and glanced benignly at the object of his largesse.
Daisy was sleeping soundly in her pushchair, oblivious to the fact that she was now the proud owner of several dolls complete with changes of clothes, stuffed toys, rattles, chunky bricks and a baby gym guaranteed to turn every child into a genius.
Alex gathered up the bags, noticing that Jenny was looking at the toys, the floor, the ceiling—in fact, anywhere but at him.
And that was totally his fault, of course.
Ever since that conversation at breakfast when he’d mentioned their sex lives, she’d avoided eye contact.
He gritted his teeth.
He hadn’t intended to embarrass her but frankly he didn’t know any girls of her age who were embarrassed about sex. They seemed to talk about it quite freely.
But not Jenny, obviously.
Little Red Riding Hood.
He let out a sigh as they strolled back to the car, wondering what he had to do to make her relax with him again. She obviously had him pegged as a real seducer of women. After the way he’d teased her at breakfast she was probably worrying about her virtue.
And she really didn’t need to.
As she’d rightly pointed out, she wasn’t his type.
He always went for blondes.
Reminding himself of that fact, he took Daisy from her but found himself looking at Jenny, noticing the thickness of her dark lashes and the smoothness of her cheeks.
It didn’t matter what her colouring was, he told himself firmly, strapping Daisy into her seat. The main reason that he wasn’t interested in her was because she was so obviously different from the sort of women that he usually spent time with.
Jenny didn’t do casual sex.
You only had to witness her appalled reaction to his lifestyle to know that.
He shocked her, and Alex didn’t tangle with women who were easily shocked.
Keeping his eyes on the road, Alex waited for her to strap herself in and then hit the accelerator.
