Her face turned a fiery red and she couldn’t think of a single suitable retort.

Alex Westerling was used to dealing with sophisticated women and she was anything but sophisticated.

She could just imagine his amusement if he discovered that she’d never even had a proper boyfriend.

She concentrated on feeding Daisy and hoped he’d drop the subject.

He didn’t.

‘I can’t make you out, Jenny Phillips.’ He spoke in that lazy, masculine drawl that seemed to connect with her nerve endings. ‘Are you really as innocent as you appear? Every time I mention sex you turn the colour of a fire engine.’

Oh, help.

‘My sex life is none of your business, Dr Westerling,’

His eyes gleamed. ‘Perhaps I’m levelling the playing field. You seem to take a keen interest in my sex life so I don’t see why you should escape unscathed.’

‘I’m only interested in your relationship with my sister,’ Jenny said in a strangled voice, wondering how this conversation had started. She really, really didn’t want to be talking about sex with Alex Westerling.

It was conjuring up images that she found incredibly disturbing.

Alex smiled. ‘All right, Little Red Riding Hood. We’ll leave it at that for now, but just remember—if you expect privacy yourself, it pays to afford others the same courtesy.’

Vowing never to ask him anything personal again, Jenny changed the subject hastily. ‘Why do you call me Little Red Riding Hood?’

He leaned forward, his blue eyes faintly mocking. ‘Because you arrive at Grandma’s cottage, knock trustingly on the door, clutching your freshly baked rolls, and don’t notice the wolf,’ he said softly, and Jenny caught her breath at the look in his eyes.

She’d never met a man with such wicked, laughing eyes. They seemed to tease and seduce at the same time.

‘I—I noticed the wolf,’ she stammered, her fingers shaking slightly as she held the spoon. ‘But I know he would never be interested in me. Or I in him.’

His eyes held hers for a long moment and then slid down, surveying every inch of her before returning to her shocked face. ‘Is that right?’

For an endless, breathless moment of aching intensity their eyes held and then Daisy bashed her spoon on the table and Jenny was jerked back to the present.

What was she doing?

And what was he doing?

She knew she wasn’t his type, and he certainly wasn’t hers.

Was he just trying to make her uneasy? If so then he’d definitely succeeded.

Thoroughly flustered by feelings that she couldn’t identify, Jenny wiped Daisy’s mouth and scooped her out of the high chair.

‘About this shopping…’

Alex rose to his feet in a fluid movement and reached for his car keys. ‘We’ll go as soon as you’re ready. I’ll put her car seat in my car.’

Refraining from asking how he was going to fit a baby seat in his flashy sports car, Jenny concentrated on Daisy, gathering together a selection of things that they might need for the trip.
