- About the Author
“Yeah,” Vernon said.
“Where are you?” Gonzo asked, sounding frantic.
“Wisconsin Ave.”
“I’ll get Patrol over there, and I’m on my way.”
Sam bent to look out the window and couldn’t believe who she saw sitting in the driver’s seat of the other car. “Gonzo…”
“What?”
“It’s Ramsey.”
“Are you kidding me?”
“It’s him.”
“I’m coming.”
Sam leaned over the seat. “Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked Vernon and Jimmy.
“Took a hit from the airbag, but I’m fine,” Jimmy said. “Vernon has a cut on his forehead.”
“I want to get out,” Sam said.
“Stay right where you are until backup arrives,” Vernon said sternly as he accepted a tissue from Jimmy to tend to the cut.
“Are you okay?” Sam asked Vernon.
“I’m fine. It’s a scratch.”
Sam wanted to scream from the delay this would cause right when she was starting to make some headway. She took a call from the chief.
“What happened?” he asked.
“I’m on Wisconsin with my detail and we got hit head-on. Ramsey hit us.”
“I’m on my way.”
“Cavalry is coming,” Sam told Vernon and Jimmy.
“From our house, too,” Jimmy said.
Sam silently raged as half an hour became an hour, statements were taken, and Ramsey was arrested, screaming that they’d hit him, not the other way around.
“Maybe this will help me get rid of him once and for all,” Farnsworth said to Sam.
“We can only hope.”
"Do you need to be seen at the ER?” the chief asked.
“Absolutely not, but Vernon might.”
“I’m fine,” Vernon said.
As media vehicles began to arrive, Sam said, “Let’s get out of here.” She handed Morgan Newell’s phone to the chief along with the piece of paper containing the code. “Would you please give this to Archie when you get back to the house?”
“Yes, I’ll take care of it.”
Vernon, Jimmy and Sam were transferred to a different Secret Service SUV after they assured their supervisors that they were fine.
Gonzo jumped into the back seat with Sam. “I’ll stick with you since you sent Freddie home.”
“I’m perfectly capable of going it alone, you know.”
“I know. Where’re we headed?”
Sam brought him up to speed on what she’d learned from Morgan Newell’s father. “Angelo Diaz worked there, too, and I want to interview their work friends. After that, I want to talk to Diaz’s family.”
“I’m with you, LT,” Gonzo said before taking a call. “Gonzales.” He listened for a long time. “Where can I find him?” More listening. “Can you text me that info?” Another pause. “It won’t come back on you. I’ll make sure of it.” He ended the call and glanced at Sam. “Getting closer to some of the bigger dealers in the area. People are reluctant to share the info, for obvious reasons.”
“Since I might not make it to City Hall today, I’ll try calling Roberto.”
The friend she’d made two years ago while undercover with the Johnson family answered on the second ring. “Is this my lady cop first lady?”
