“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that,” Sam said.

“I’m not joking around here. He could kill you with one well-placed punch, Sam. Don’t act like he couldn’t. He’s twice your size.”

“I know. You’re right, and I was stupid to stand there and take it from him. I should’ve kicked him in the balls or something, but I don’t trust the hip quite yet for ball kicking.”

“All the more reason why this is so outrageous. You’re still on desk duty. You shouldn’t have to worry about defending yourself in our own house.”

“I’m all right, Freddie.”

“This time. I want him out of here once and for all.”

“Right there with you, Detective,” Andrews said when he returned from the basement. “Lieutenant, please give me a written statement of what occurred immediately. I’ll take it directly to the chief. We’ve all had enough of this guy.”

“Will do, sir.”

After Andrews walked away, Freddie said, “Do you need help with it?”

“I’ve got it, but if you could proof me, that’d help.”

“You got it.”

“Any word from Archie with the dump of Spencer’s phone?”

“I’ll go check on that while you write the report.”

“Thanks.”

Sam went into her office, ran her hands through her hair and then twisted it into a clip to keep it out of her way. She fired up her computer and called up the report template and began typing. With the incident still fresh in her mind, it flowed quickly.

“What happened?” Joe Farnsworth asked from the doorway, his expression thunderous.

Sam gave him the gist.

“Honest to God. I’ve completely had it with that guy.” Turning toward the pit, he said, “Sergeant Gonzales, can you confirm that Sergeant Ramsey intended to punch Lieutenant Holland?”

“Yes, sir. His arm was cocked backward, and he was winding up when I stopped him.”

“I’ll have him charged with attempted assault and battery and put the union on notice that they can take me to court if they’d like, but that guy isn’t welcome in this building going forward.”

After he stormed off, Gonzo came to Sam’s office. “Whoa. Never seen him so wound up.”

“He’s had enough. We all have.”

Freddie came in with a massive stack of paper. “The dump on Spencer’s phone.”

“Holy crap.” Sam eyed the stack. “That’s got to be one of the biggest we’ve ever seen.”

“He used it for work, so I’m sure a lot of it is that. We’ll get started on this while you finish the report.”

“It’s done. I sent it to you. If it’s okay, you can submit it.”

Freddie handed the pages to Gonzo. “I’ll meet you in the conference room.”

Sam got up to follow Gonzo and the phone dump to the conference room, trying to ignore the ache in her hip that had intensified while she was seated. If Ramsey had caused a setback in her recovery, she would stab him.

“What’s wrong?” Gonzo asked. “Other than the obvious.”

“Did something to the recovering hip while I was trying to get away from him.”
