  42. About the Author

“That’s an amazing idea. Do you think Nick would be okay with that?”

“Of course he would. They’re family. Should we just do the GoFundMe and not tell her? It’s not like she’s capable of deciding anything right now.”

“I’m okay with it if you are, but it should come from me, not you.”

“Agreed.” Sam glanced at her partner. “Is it okay if I have Freddie set it up for us?”

He gave a thumbs-up.

“Yeah, that’s fine.”

“He’ll take care of it. It will probably raise a lot of money because she’s related to me. Do you think that’ll cause an issue?”

“You probably should run it by Nick, Terry, Lilia and the communications people before you make it live.”

“I’ll do that.”

“Thanks for thinking about the practicalities while I tend to the broken heart.”

“We’ll get her through this,” Sam said with more certainty of that now that some of the most urgent needs were being seen to. “I keep asking myself, how did this even happen?”

“I know. Mike and I were talking about that last night. How can Spencer be dead?”

“I’m going to find the person who did this to him—to them—and make them pay.”

“If anyone can do it,” Tracy said, “you can.”

Sam sure as hell hoped so.

When Archie told her that the dump on Spencer’s phone would take until the morning due to the amount of business activity he had on it, Sam decided to go home. Her concentration was nonexistent, so there was no point sticking around. After her father died, she’d been on fire with the need to finally solve his shooting. That had powered her through those first weeks.

As horrible as it had been to lose her dad, at least they’d known for the entire four years since his shooting that they could lose him at any time. This was different. Spencer was young, and most of them hadn’t had the first clue that he was juggling with dynamite by procuring pain pills illegally. The shock this time was even more so than when Skip died, and the heartbreak of knowing his young children would barely remember him, and his unborn child would never know him, overwhelmed her.

“I’m going home,” Sam said to Freddie, who was alone in the pit. It hadn’t occurred to her to ask where the others were, and she couldn’t be bothered to ask now. Gonzo was in charge, and he’d take care of things while she couldn’t.

“Is Vernon still driving you?”

“Yeah. Another week or so before I’m back to driving myself.” It’d been days since she’d given a thought to her still-recovering hip fracture.

“The GoFundMe is all set to go. I sent you a link to approve it before I make it live.”

“I’ll talk to Nick and his team to make sure they’re okay with it and text you later. Thanks for the very good idea.”

“I wish there was more I could do.”

“If this works the way you think it will, it’s the very best thing you could do for her.”
