- About the Author
“We have to stay on top of that.”
“I know. I’m worried about the baby.”
“Maybe we need to get her doctor over there.”
“Let’s see how she is tomorrow.”
“Lilia is bringing up a form that will give us permission to examine Spencer’s phone. Will you ask her to sign it for me? Tell her I’d never ask if it wasn’t incredibly important.”
“I’ll take care of it.”
“Thanks, Trace. I’ll be home after a bit.”
“No worries. I have friends covering my kids after school so I can stay with her, and Celia has Jack and Ella.”
“Thank goodness for family and friends, huh?”
“No kidding.”
“I’ll see you soon.”
“No rush. I’m here.”
“I’m never not thankful for that.”
“Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
Sam slapped her phone closed and was surprised to see the chief of police standing in her doorway. She rose to greet him. “Come in.”
Chief Joe Farnsworth came in and shut the door. “How’s Angela?”
“Not good.”
“What are you doing here? I thought you took today off.”
“I had some things to do.”
He took a seat in her visitor chair, seeming exhausted and overwhelmed. Sam and her sisters were nieces to him, and he was surely devastated for Angela and the rest of the Holland family. “What kind of things?” The look he gave her said he knew exactly what she was up to, and there was no point in trying to hide it from him.
She looked him in the eyes when she said, “The sort where I went to Camp David, collected evidence from my sister’s cabin and brought it back here to be processed along with Spencer’s phone, which has gone to Archie along with a form from Angela giving us permission to dump it.”
“What’re you looking for?”
“Someone sold him laced pills. I want to know who.”
“Back up and start from the beginning.”
A headache forming between her eyebrows had her reaching for Motrin and a half-full bottle of water. “He’d been battling an opioid addiction following a back injury more than a year ago. It had gotten bad enough for two trips to rehab that didn’t work and an ultimatum from his pregnant wife to get clean or get gone. He was due to return to rehab this week. As a result of his addiction, he’d lost his job, his benefits, his life insurance and was on the verge of losing his family.”
The chief’s expression registered shock. “Dear God, Sam, and you had no idea?”
“They told no one. Spencer didn’t want it to blow back on Nick.”
His deep sigh said it all. “I can’t believe this.”
“None of us can. Other than Nick, who am I closer to than my sisters? I had no clue this was happening to them. Have I been so caught up in my own life that I missed this?”
“No, you haven’t. They intentionally kept it from everyone. Don’t do that to yourself.”
“It’s hard not to.”
