“Yeah, it would. Maybe Ang will decide to go public with it at some point, because there’s a lot of good we could do on this issue.”

“Yes, there is.”

A knock on the door sounded.

“That’ll be my breakfast.”

“I’ll get it,” he said.

Sam watched him get up and cross the room. What did it say about her that she loved him so much that even watching him move did it for her? It said she had a bad case of love for him, and it seemed to get worse all the time, which was fine with her.

When she started to get up, he said, “Stay put. I’ll bring it to you.”

“Bless you.”

Knowing she was the only person in the world that the sexy president of the United States waited on also did it for her. Big-time.

He set her coffee on the bedside table and a plate of steaming eggs, bacon, toast and fruit on her lap. “Is there anything else I can get you, madam?”

“This will do for now. Thank you, sir.”

He gave a gallant little bow and left to get his own plate and coffee, returning to the bed to eat with her.

“This is the life. Breakfast in bed with the president.”

“I’m not the president here. I’m just your husband.”

“Just my husband. I like that.”

“I need one place in the world to be just Nick, husband and father.”

“I’m happy to be your safe place, love.”

“And before I forget to say it, I’m so damned proud of you for tracking down these murdering assholes so quickly while you were in shock and trying to be there for your sister and nephew and the rest of us. This is why I call you my Wonder Woman.”

“Thank you but having to face Spencer’s funeral today makes it a hollow victory.”

“I know, but it’s a victory, nonetheless. You’ve saved a lot of other families from tragedy.”

“I just wish I could’ve saved my own from this nightmare.”

Before they left for the funeral, Sam went upstairs to see Angela and Jack. Celia had taken Ella outside to play on the swings so she wouldn’t see her mom and Jack leave for the funeral. A friend of Angela’s was coming to pick up Ella so Celia could go to the funeral.

Sam knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

Angela wore a black maternity dress with heels, while Jack sat next to her in a dark suit and tie. His hair had been combed into submission. He looked like a tiny man trying to be strong for his mother, which broke her heart all over again.

She took Angela aside while Jack watched TV. “I, um, I wanted to tell you that we got them, the dealers, the kingpin, all of them.”

“Who was it?” Angela asked in a dull, flat tone.

“A dealer named Sal Vincent had decided to run a rival dealer named Riggs Lawton out of business by hiring Lawton’s dealers to sell laced pills to unsuspecting customers. One of those dealers was Matthias Foster, the man we arrested at the wake.”
