  45. SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE

And, most importantly, there weren’t any people in the frames.

‘What information are you getting here?’ He wanted to be sure.

‘We’ve been hearing reports of the area being affected by drought, so we want to make sure that all the animals are being looked after properly. Actually, we had a report that someone round here wasn’t looking after his animals, so we came to check that out and decided to look at other farms while we were here.’

Dave crossed his arms. ‘A report? From whom?’ As he asked the question, he remembered Will’s cryptic comment. ‘I’m not sure, but I may have had something to do with them being here.’

‘I don’t know who made the actual report, but we were told to look at farms in the area. One out on Golddine Road and the other on the highway into town. We’ve done both.’

‘And what did you see?’

‘The animals were in poor condition. We sent the images back to the people in charge and they’ll decide what to do.’

Golddine was the road out to Rowberry Glen. Okay, so there was a bit more to this than Dave had thought. Who would’ve made the report to an activists’ group rather than the RSPCA or the Department of Agriculture? Surely not Will. He wondered if he’d ever get to ask him now.

‘Can you give me the name of the people you deal with?’ Lee looked sheepish. ‘I actually don’t know. I just get told where I need to go and I send the pictures back.’

Dave nodded. ‘Thanks for being so honest with me. I’m going to have a quick chat to the other two and come back to you.’ He got up to head out the door but stopped with his hand on the doorknob. ‘Just one more thing. If you guys are students—and trust me, I’ve been there, so I know there’s hardly any money even to buy a beer—how did you buy the drone?’

‘It was supplied.’

‘Who by?’

‘Voices for Animals.’

Dave nodded and left the room. Seems Steve was on the money. Voices for Animals had started to turn up in places other than Victoria.

‘Anything interesting?’ he asked Jack, who was glued to the computer screen.

‘All three are members of Voices for Animals. See, they’re listed here on their website.’ He pointed to Sophie’s name first. ‘Grawd, Sophie. Jones, Lee.’ He slid his finger down the screen until he found Terry’s name.
