  45. SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE

Dave scratched his head. ‘So, I know I’m not that tech savvy, but don’t they take photos? I can see a camera at the front here. Where do the pictures end up?’

‘Downloaded onto a laptop somewhere, I’d assume. Did you find a laptop?’

‘Yeah, there was one on the back seat.’

‘My guess is that the images would be on that.’

‘And is the camera a good one?’

‘Yep, got the ability to zoom, as well as a wide-angle shot, and it adjusts its focus while it’s flying. It’ll have some good footage, I’d imagine. And they could’ve taken stills as well as video.’

‘Right.’ Dave had made some notes of his own and was now looking back over them. ‘And the cost?’

‘No change out of two and half g.’

‘You’d wonder how these kids would be able to afford that, wouldn’t you?’

Jack shrugged. ‘Rich parents. Who knows? Maybe they’ve got jobs, but they look like students to me.’

‘Well, they’re in that age range, for sure.’

‘Maybe they’re not students, maybe they’ve got good jobs.’

‘We won’t know until we question them. Listen, the reason I pulled you out today was because Steve wants you to go undercover in an activist group. If these guys are doing what I think they’re doing, then we can’t take the chance they’ll see your face. If you agree to take the job, that is.’

‘What the hell does he want me for?’

‘Because you can speak the farming language. All he wants you to do is feed info back as to where the next protest is going to be, so they can have numbers there to contain it. There’s been some problems over east with the rallies getting out of hand.’

‘And how the hell—’

Dave shook his head. ‘That’s all I know at the moment. Have a think about it and get back to me. But for the moment, stay out of the sight of these three, okay?’

Jack nodded. ‘Do you want me to do a little research on them all?’

‘There’s nothing on the system?’

‘They’re all clean and they gave you their real names. I’ve checked all of the DLs.’

‘Good job,’ Dave said and dangled a set of keys in front of him. ‘Go and pick up their car. Joan can run you out there.’

Dave chose to talk to Lee first. After all, it was his car.

Lee was sitting at the table, his hands clasped in front of him.

‘Do you need a coffee or anything?’ Dave asked.

Lee shook his head.

‘How long have you been up in Barker?’ Dave asked, pulling out the chair and sitting opposite him.

‘About two weeks.’

‘And where are you staying?’

‘In the chalets at the caravan park.’
