  45. SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE

‘And? It’s not illegal for Victorians to be over here, is it?’

‘Well, that’s the problem. There’s nothing concrete, but she saw them pulling out of a parking bay when she was on her way out there a couple of days ago, and the footy club boys said the car was parked right next to their front gate when they turned up to go and see Will.’

‘Whose front gate?’ Dave needed to be sure.

‘At Rowberry Glen.’

‘Go on.’ He motioned with his hand for Jack to keep talking.

‘Then it turned up in the same spot again at 3.02 am and stayed parked at the gate for about ten minutes. And, rightly, Zara’s come in to let us know in case there’s anything illegal going on.’

Dave looked at him out of the corner of his eye. ‘Have you made a new friend?’

‘Just think she’s done the right thing here. Zara knows she’s not going to get anything out of me for any of her stories unless I’m cleared to give information. We came to an understanding this morning.’

A half-smirk crossed Dave’s face but quickly disappeared as a pen hit him.

‘Anyway, what I was thinking was, perhaps if we see this vehicle we can pull them over and have a chat. See what they’re doing here and so on. If we don’t see it, maybe they’ve just moved on.’

‘Have you run the plates?’

‘Not yet. Thought I’d see what your thoughts were.’

‘Won’t hurt to run the plates, or have a chat if we see the car around.’

Dave went to his desk and sat down, opening his emails. ‘Has there been anything come back on the Facebook page about the drone?’

‘Not that I’ve seen. I did notice that Zara liked the post, which means she’d get a notification if anyone commented on it. Always the journo, even with everything going on.’

‘Like I said to you before—distraction.’

‘Don’t forget to tell Kim.’

Dave rolled his eyes. ‘Do you think I would?’

‘More than likely if you get caught up in answering emails.’

‘Jeez!’ Dave took out his phone and sent Kim a text, then turned his attention to his emails.

The one from Steve, his boss, caught his attention.

Can you spare Jack for a couple of weeks?

Odd request, Dave thought, glancing over at Jack.

What for?

It would probably be a little while before he heard anything back from Steve, so he started working through the rest of the emails, responding or deleting as required.

‘I’m going out,’ Jack said after a while. ‘Might have a squiz around for that car. It’s not like there’s anything else happening at the moment.’

‘Roger that. Call me if you find it and I’ll come out.’

‘Righto.’

With Jack gone, Dave picked up the phone and dialled Steve’s number.
