- SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE
‘Don’t want to risk having them lying around if something goes wrong.’
Jack had been toying with the idea of asking for his phone when Blue said, ‘It’s like the phones. They stay off until the heat has passed. Don’t want anyone knowing where we are. The cops can track through phones, you know.’
‘How would the cops know whose phone to track?’ Jack asked. ‘Are they following us?’
‘Not that I know of, but we don’t take risks.’
Crumbs opened a large can of baked beans and poured it into a pot. He put four slices of wholemeal toast under a gas grill then stirred the beans. ‘There’s water over there and the kettle. Fill it up and put it on the stove,’ he instructed.
Tonka and Blue carted more wood in from outside then lay back on the beds, while Crumbs scooped up the baked beans and toast and put them on four plates. Jack boiled the coffee.
‘Like I said, good job, boys. That’ll teach the fuckers,’ Crumbs said as he shovelled the food into his mouth. ‘Those poor bloody pigs. Did you see the mess they were in? Shouldn’t be allowed to keep them like that. An animal needs to be out in the open. Loved and cared for. Those poor things, sitting in their own shit and filth. We’ll get that industry shut down if it’s the last thing I do. Kinder for them to be out among nature.’
Tonka nodded his head. ‘It’s not natural them all being cooped up like that. The engine room was easy to kill,’ he said. ‘There was nothing sophisticated about the power board. Cut a few wires and I was done.’
‘Yeah, get in and out real quick,’ Blue agreed.
‘Only way to do it.’ Crumbs turned to Jack. ‘So, Mr Angry Guy, are you satisfied now? This hardcore enough for you?’
‘Bloody brilliant. Best thing I’ve done in a long time,’ Jack said. ‘That’ll show everyone what really goes on. Talk about being pumped.’ He clenched his fist.
‘I’d love to see the fall-out,’ said Crumbs. ‘All of those cameras you put up, they’re recording what’s happening and the vision is going back to a bloke I trust. He’s going to post it on Facebook when he’s edited it. Everyone will see how bad pig farming really is then.’
Jack understood. It was a set-up. No one would know that the cooling system had been disabled. All people were going to see was animals panting and in distress. That in turn would cause an uproar about farming techniques and they would try to shut the industry down. Just like Crumbs had said before.
‘Like I said …’ Jack muttered, pushing his plate away. He couldn’t eat any more. ‘Bloody brilliant.’
‘Not hungry?’ Crumbs asked.
‘Nah. Never eat too much this time of the day.’
