  45. SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE

‘Tony.’ They shook hands.

‘Guess I’ll see you in the mess tonight.’

‘See you then.’ Jack followed the passageway back to his room, showered then settled at the desk. The dossier was thick and full of detail.

They’d followed four people: two men and two women. As far as the dogs could tell, they were the closest to being in charge.

Josh Parker, 25-year-old, chiropractor. Not married, two foster dogs. Volunteers at the pound and specialises in rehoming abandoned animals. Member of Voices for Animals for five years. Attended over twenty protests, none violent. Last one: Dublin saleyards.

Raymond Devlin, 30-year-old disability worker. Married with a baby, two months old. One dog, one cat. Member of Voices for Animals for three years. Last protest: a steakhouse in Melbourne where eight members stood quietly in the restaurant and held up placards telling the diners that animals had feelings.

Jack shook his head, feeling frustrated, but read on.

Amber Robinson, 22-year-old, student. Lives alone, no animals. Member of Voices for Animals for two years. Last protest: same steakhouse as Raymond Devlin.

Kristen Dunn, 28-year-old, cafe proprietor. Lives alone. Owner of Kristen Goes Raw (where meetings are held). Attended over one hundred rallies, focusing mainly on live export and piggeries.

Sounds like I’m going to be having a whole bunch of fun in the next little while, Jack thought as he turned the page.

Having followed Josh Parker for a week, we have seen him entering 32 Brock Road in Unley, Adelaide. Further investigations of records show this is his primary place of residence. He walks his dogs in the park a kilometre from his house and attends meetings for Voices for Animals weekly, at Kristen Goes Raw on Jamnut Street in Hunter.

Jack looked at the photos of Josh. He was a thickset man, going prematurely bald. There were pictures of him throwing balls to his dogs, in the park, walking to work. His workplace showed posters promoting Voices for Animals. The next one was of him sitting in Kristen Goes Raw with a group of other members of the group. Jack picked up the photo and looked closely. He recognised Sophie Grawd sitting next to Josh. So she was in there too. It was a good thing Dave had pulled him off the job when he’d impounded the car.

He flicked through the rest of the information then turned his attention to the computer and the links provided by the dogs.
