A special thank-you to Michael Bethencourt. Love of my life. My best friend. My husband. My life partner. Thank you for loving me and standing by my side. This book wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for your constant love and for dreaming this dream together with me. Thank you for never letting me give it up. I love you.

Many thanks to my first-grade teachers, who included my very first story in a Portuguese test. It was about a bug named Silvia, and it got me in trouble with a kid also named Silvia, who swore revenge because she thought I’d named the bug after her. It was a little startling, but it also made me realize I really wanted to be a writer when I grew up. By the way, Silvia, if you’re out there reading this, I swear it wasn’t on purpose!

Thank you to all the teachers and academic advisers in my life, everyone who believed in me and in my dream and told my mom I should be a writer. Thank you to my high school teachers at Colégio Militar do Recife, and everyone involved in the Youth Ambassadors Program, which opened so many doors that ultimately changed my life forever in the best way possible.

A special thank-you to Rachel Russell for cheering me on since our early querying days. Thank you for your thoughtful advice on the first draft of Salt and Sugar. But, above all, thank you for being my friend and for the daily jokes you sent me for a whole month to cheer me up. Salt and Sugar wouldn’t be here without your support.

Thank you one thousand times to my incredible agent, Thao Le, for believing in me. I mean it. You championed Salt and Sugar and loved the story as much as I did and I’ll always be grateful. And thank you to everyone at Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency and all my agent siblings for all the support.

I have so much love and gratitude for everyone who put together LatinxPitch. This event was like a breath of fresh air during one of the most difficult moments in my life and helped me make incredible connections that led to Salt and Sugar going to auction. You’re one of the reasons why my dream came true.

Rebecca Kuss, thank you for being my acquiring editor. Thank you for connecting with my story and for believing in it. We didn’t get a chance to finish this publishing journey together, but I’m grateful for all the support. Your connection to my story as a reader means a lot to me.
