They had no idea how very big of a deal that book was. Diesel cleared his throat to try to regain control of his mounting emotions. “As a matter of fact, I am. I appreciate you putting this stuff together, and I’m really sorry for taking off the way I did and leaving you hanging.”

“We get it,” Biggs reassured him. “But there are a few things that go along with being part of this family that you need to hear. The first is that we’ve cut you in as a partner in the bar and the auto shop.”

“Whoa, Biggs. What’re you talking about?” There was no hiding the shock in his voice.

“The bar is a family business, and Axel left the shop to the family. You’re part of this family, son.”

Diesel was overwhelmed by his generosity. “Thank you, but I don’t need a handout. I’m cool working for you all.”

“Don’t you give me that handout shit,” Biggs snapped. “This is family business, not charity.”

“Biggs, it’s too much.” He looked at the others, hoping for support, but they were shaking their heads, clearly in agreement with Biggs. “You all paid your dues. You worked your asses off to keep the businesses going.”

“So have you.” Biggs limped closer. “Every time you’ve come to town, for more years than I can count, you’ve put in time for us. You stepped in when we needed you most these last couple of years, and you’ve given nearly seven days a week to our family—to your family. Which brings me to our next order of business. Tiny, Reba, and I have been holding on to a piece of our past that was important to all of us, but mostly to Axel. It’s not much, just a little cabin across town where we grew up, and until he was too weak to do so, Axel used to go there when he needed to think. Tiny said he told you about it when you first left Colorado.”

“Yeah, he did. I’ve been going there since my first trip to Peaceful Harbor.” Just like Axel. He liked knowing that.

Biggs nodded. “It’s yours now, son.”

Rendered speechless, Diesel shook his head, sure he misunderstood what Biggs was saying.

“Funny thing is, every few years we talked about selling it,” Biggs said with a thoughtful expression. “We never could let it go. Now we know why. It’s been waiting for you.”

“Biggs, I can’t…” Shit. Emotions clogged his throat. “You don’t even know what my plans are.”

“I don’t give a damn what your plans are. The cabin is ours, and we’re giving it to you. What you do with it is your decision.”
