“I don’t know.” Tracey glanced at Bullet, panic burning in her chest. The Whiskeys might treat her like family, but Diesel was a Dark Knight, which meant he was even more their family than she was. “Am I going to be fired?”
A deep laugh rumbled out of Bullet. “Not a chance, sweetheart. We don’t fire family.”
“But…?” Tracey didn’t know what to say.
“Diesel’s a big boy. He can handle himself,” Bullet said. “I didn’t realize you were having such a hard time with him. I’ll talk to him.”
“No,” Tracey said quickly. “This is my mess. I’ll clean it up.”
“Honey, you’re shaking.” Finlay rubbed a hand down Tracey’s back. “Want me to make you some tea or something before we go?”
“No, thanks. I need to get back out there.” She blew out a breath, her heart pounding frantically. “What if I just poked the bear? We have hours until we close. What if he’s even worse now?”
“You can’t think that way.” Finlay gave her hand a squeeze. “You showed him what you’re made of. Now, you go out there and prove it. Hold your head up high and be strong. Heck, I did that to Bullet. Right, Bullet?”
Bullet nuzzled the baby, softening all his hard edges. “I’ve never seen anyone stand up to Diesel and live to tell about it.”
Finlay glared at him.
“What?” Bullet’s brow furrowed. “I’m talking about guys, not pretty little gals like Tracey. I’ve never seen any sweethearts stand up to that man.”
“Great. If I don’t show up for work tomorrow, you’ll know why.” Tracey pushed through the double doors with her heart in her throat, feeling the intensity of Diesel’s stare like a laser beam on her back as she went to check on her customers.
Dixie fell into step beside her. “What did you say to him? He looks like he’s ready to kill someone.”
“I told him to back off. Bullet and Fin saw us. It was so embarrassing.”
“They’re here?”
“They just stopped by to get something.” Slick flagged her over to the table. “I gotta go.”
“That guy was looking for you a minute ago. Seems like a real douche.”
“Tell me about it.” Tracey went to see what he wanted. “Hi. Can I get you something?”
Slick arched a brow. “I thought you said you and that guy weren’t a thing.”
“Sure looked like you went in through those doors for a quickie,” the biggest of the three guys said.
Slick cocked a grin. “We’ll show you a better time than that asshole.”
