GREG For you. I said some of that stuff for you and because … (Beat.) Yes, I like us when we’re at our best but right now … at this moment … standing in this fucking place that ate up so much of my life—that’s why I asked you guys to meet me here! Because it’s so symbolic of who I might’ve been … or ended up being—and I don’t wanna be that guy … hell, I don’t even wanna be who I am now! I wanna fix me and be happy. I want that, I do. And for you, too … and everybody. I want us all to be happy but I don’t even know what that word means any more! “Happiness.” I really don’t … I mean, you can’t touch it or, or taste it, so what the hell is it? I dunno! But I wanna get there, to “happy.” To some “happy” place where I can just, you know, sit down for a few minutes … sit and do whatever it is that happy people do. That’s what I’m looking for. (Beat.) I’m telling you the truth, Steph … I’ve gotta go do this! I can’t keep reading books and, and listening to my old mix tapes and hoping for the best, figuring life will sort itself out if I just give it enough time. The time is now! I have gotta get out of here and try this on my own … and when I’ve succeeded at that then maybe I’ll be … you know … ready for the next step, and the next one, and whatever else might happen after that. And then … if somehow you’re still around … who knows?
STEPH Hmmmm. Don’t count on it.
GREG I won’t.
STEPH I mean, fuck … (Beat.) I guess … we can stay in touch if that’s what you wanna do, but …/ Fine.
GREG That’d be great./ I’d like that.
STEPH … or I could possibly come visit at some point, even … to check it out.
GREG That could work, too … (Beat.) I mean, you could always cut hair in New York …
STEPH Yeah. I could even open my own shop … or, you know. Something./ But I’m not gonna hold my breath.
GREG Absolutely you could./ I understand.
STEPH I feel like if there’s a way to fuck this up, Greg, you will …
GREG knows this is probably true and he smiles and looks away. STEPH watches him until he speaks:
GREG Thanks. (Beat.) I really wouldn’t hate it if you show up on my doorstep some day … just, like, you know … outta the blue.
STEPH As what? Your “friend?”/ You already have Carly for that … apparently …
GREG Maybe so. Maybe more./ Steph. Please … Anyway, I should be so lucky … I think friends with you would be great. I’d love to be your friend, Steph. I really would. (He points to the door.) You want me to walk you out … or …?
