  13. REASONS TO BE HAPPY

CARLY No, wait …/ That’s not what I meant, Greg.

GREG … yeah, but I’m just saying …

CARLY You misunderstood me. I didn’t mean “take care of it” as in raise the baby./ That’s not what I’m saying.

GREG Oh./ But … so then … what’re you …?

CARLY I’m saying if we don’t stay together then I’m going to “take care of it.” (Beat.) Is that not clear enough for you?

GREG … you mean …?

CARLY Yeah.

GREG But … no … we can’t … no, no, no, no …!

CARLY Ummmm, yeah, Greg, I can. I can do that if I need to or whatever, want to, even, if I’m on my own. (Beat.) It’s not a we thing. It’s only a we thing if you’re with me. Do you get that?

GREG Carly, wait, that’s … I can’t possibly be asked to …/ No, hold on, seriously. This is a huge thing that … you know? Wait.

CARLY What?/ Obviously I know, Greg! Yes. But I also know that I can’t do this again … be a single mom to another child and have to try and … I’m just not gonna face that again, I don’t have to, it’s not 1845 any more so I have options and that’s just a fact. (Beat.) I am not blackmailing you on this … this is not a threat … it’s just a fact about me and our, like, situation … (Beat.) Neither one of us asked for this, we just … we found each other at a time where it made sense but we were also in need, you know? I was. And maybe … look, it doesn’t matter. I like you … I could even fall in love with you with just a little nudge, but … I also know that you and Steph have a ton of history so that’s not … (Tosses her hands up.) Why am I the one doing all the talking here? I mean … Steph warned me about this! This is so “you,” Greg … you let stuff happen to you, it happens and you just go with it but guess what? You are in the thick of it now, you’re dead in the middle of this and you’ve gotta choose a direction to move … you do. You can’t just ride it out … ok? (Beat.) Your turn now, so go. (Beat.) Go.

GREG just stares at her. Trying to figure out what to say and how to deal with this. He weighs each word carefully:

GREG Ok … listen … I’m just gonna say whatever comes into my … that’ll be the best thing so I just … yeah. Here goes.

CARLY Wait. Just … (Grabs his coffee and then gulps the rest of it down.) I’m ready now.

GREG I think …/ Please, Carly … this is hard enough! God! That’s just cruel …

CARLY … did I mention that Jennifer is really happy being around you …?/ I’m kidding.
