KENT Huh. (Beat.) So then … this has been going on for a while now, I guess.
CARLY Fuck you, Kent. That’s all the answer a question like that deserves.
KENT What? You’re doing the same thing I did to you … seeing somebody behind my back!
CARLY We were married, asshole! Married! That’s totally different …
KENT He’s my friend.
CARLY I wouldn’t count on that in an earthquake if I were you …
KENT The fuck does that mean?
CARLY It means just how it sounds. (Beat.) I’m not sure you’ve got any friends, Kent …
KENT That’s bullshit!
CARLY Well, I don’t care, and that’s the real answer. I’m tired and I need to get home to relieve my mom because Jennifer’s had a fever the last couple nights …
KENT Really? I mean … is she …?
CARLY She’s fine. Don’t pretend./ You stop.
KENT Oh stop./ I’m asking.
CARLY She’s okay. I’m taking her in today but I think she’s alright.
KENT That’s … you need any money … or …?
CARLY No. (Yawns.) I really need to go.
They stand for a moment, facing each other, and then the worst thing that could happen does—GREG appears at the door, dressed in a shirt and tie. Looking in.
They all remain frozen, like a Mexican stand-off directed by an Italian filmmaker. GREG finally opens the door and enters the room. CARLY looks at KENT, then kisses GREG. GREG returns it, all the while keeping one eye on KENT.
CARLY turns and heads out the door. Calling back as she exits:
CARLY … hey there./ I’ll be back in a minute. I gotta finish up and punch out.
GREG Morning. Sorry if I’m … late./ Ok, that sounds good. I’ll … just … (Beat.) Yeah.
The two men are left in the room alone. Sizing each other up in silence for a moment.
KENT I promised myself I wasn’t gonna kill you if I saw you …
GREG I think that’s a promise worth keeping.
KENT Yeah, but now I’m not so sure.
GREG … Kent …
KENT Forget it. I just hashed it out with her and I’m too fucking tired to get into it with you. At least this second …
GREG Great. Does that mean I can expect to get jumped one day in the parking lot or something? That should be fun for the kids …
KENT Maybe. Always worked for me before …
GREG Look, man … this is …
KENT Dude, no, I’m not gonna “look” or any of that shit. I don’t need to be reasonable about this. This isn’t one of your damn novels. She’s my wife.
GREG Ex-wife, Kent.
KENT Whatever.
GREG No, not whatever. I’m not trying to start something here, but you lost her.
KENT Fuck that.
GREG You gave her up. You let that happen. Be honest, man. (Beat.) You know that’s true.
KENT … Greg, you need to stop now …
GREG I’m not gonna fight with you, trust me, that’s the last thing I want …
