“That’s not good. That means... No, it couldn’t have been her who tried to kill Stephen,” DeAnna argued as if Daniel had said something contrary. “He’s a big guy. She’s short and skinny.”

“Stephen said he fell on the hook. Maybe she got caught by a gust of wind. It was really blustery that night. He was grabbing for her, she went over the edge—”

“Sure, that’s possible, but why keep it quiet?”

They looked at each other in alarm.

“Something funny’s going on. Something...not good.”

“I’m going to ask around and see if anybody’s seen her or knows anything,” DeAnna said.

“Be discreet,” Daniel warned.

“No kidding. I don’t want to go overboard, and I really don’t want a hook in the back.”

RUNE SAT AT THE breakfast table and talked, an outpouring of frustration. “I hired Melinda to come in and help with the shop. I need help during the festival. Right? That makes sense, doesn’t it? I can’t run the shop, do my regular psychic readings and the tourist readings and keep on schedule with the festival setup. Melinda’s always been dependable, and she has her own fortune-telling costume, and she dyes her hair pomegranate-red which really adds a wild vibe to the outfit.” She tugged at the strand of hair shortened by the bullet’s impact. “When I called to give her her schedule, her voice mail said she was on vacation. She didn’t even call me! Honestly, people! Show a little concern for your commitments!”

Elle handed Adam a plate piled with silverware and he loaded the dishwasher.

“My shipment of Magic 8 Balls has been delayed. I’ve got four fortune-tellers lined up, one to read palms, one to read runes, one to read a crystal ball and one to run the machine that spits out fortunes. Miss Crystal Ball doesn’t want to sell my products. No, she thinks she should get to sell her own. You’d think if she really was psychic she’d know that’s going to get her fired faster than anything.” Rune sucked in a breath. “You wouldn’t happen to know a fortune-teller who wants to work at a psychic festival, would you?”

“I can safely say you’re the only fortune-teller I know.” Adam shut the dishwasher door and set the cycle. “How about you, Elle?”

“I can safely say Rune is one of the few people I know.” Elle sat back down at the table.

Rune blinked, glanced at her watch and dabbed her mouth with her napkin. “I’m not here to complain. I’m here to see if I can help Elle recover more of her memory. Shall we try hypnosis again?”

“Yes, please.” Elle sounded very sure.

“What was it you learned last night?”

“That after I hurt the monster who had attacked me, I jumped into the ocean to escape.”
