- On any top-ten list of best Sunday plans, today’s brunch with my former crush and his new girlfriend would rank number eleven … hundred. Times five. But I couldn’t say no. We’re still friends.
“It’s a very big bagel. Can you eat it all?” Audrey asked as the bunny in a high-pitched voice as Jake returned to the room with Luna’s clothes. He raised his eyebrows at Audrey.
“Yes.” Luna took another bite.
“Don’t you think Uncle Jake looks hungry?” The bunny came closer to Luna and Audrey loudly whispered in a squeaky voice as the bunny, “You better eat it quickly before Uncle Jake tries to eat it.”
Luna looked up at Uncle Jake and took her final bite.
Audrey moved the bunny to the cup of milk and made the bunny peer into it. “Do bunnies like milk?”
“No. Cats like milk.” Luna drank her milk.
“Good job,” Audrey said in the bunny voice. “Now let’s get Thomas in the stroller.”
While Audrey strapped Thomas into the stroller, Jake said, “Great job, Luna and bunny.”
“That’s Bella.”
“Great job, Luna and Bella. Now let’s get you dressed.” He sat down and turned her chair to face him and helped her put on her sweatpants and a pink sparkly unicorn shirt.
Audrey loaded the various bags onto the back of the stroller. She handed Thomas a small truck to play with in the stroller.
“I like the unicorn,” Jake said.
“No unicorns,” Luna stamped her foot. “No pink.”
“Pink unicorns give you special powers,” Jake said.
“Like what?”
“They can make you fly.” He picked up Luna and flew her around the room. Luna giggled excitedly. He was so natural with his niece and nephew.
“More.”
“We’ll have to fly to school if you don’t hurry up,” he said.
“No unicorn.” Luna crossed her arms. “My best friend Lucy doesn’t like pink.”
“Pink is a great color,” Audrey said.
“You’re not wearing pink,” Luna said.
“That’s true,” Audrey said. “But I do wear pink.”
“Audrey was wearing a pink top when we met,” Jake said. Their gazes met. He remembered that?
“No pink.” Luna shook her head.
“Maybe you should get another shirt. C’mon Luna, let’s brush your teeth,” Audrey said. Luna took her hand trustingly, and Audrey felt flattered.
“Yes, I don’t want her to end up in therapy from the time I made her wear a pink shirt. But personally, I think she should ditch this Lucy,” Jake said.
Audrey finished brushing Luna’s teeth as Jake returned with a smorgasbord of non-pink shirts, hoping there was one she would like. Luna looked skeptically at the shirts.
His eyes, frustrated, met Audrey’s. She smiled wryly and said, “We’re about to be defeated by two kids.”
