  68. On any top-ten list of best Sunday plans, today’s brunch with my former crush and his new girlfriend would rank number eleven … hundred. Times five. But I couldn’t say no. We’re still friends.

“Hunger.” Jake let that sink in. “I was always hungry first in my family. If I wanted to eat something, I had to cook.”

“And what are you planning to make for us tonight?”

“Jake’s beef vegetable mish-mash.”

“A mish-mash, not many people know how to make that,” she said in a serious tone.

“It’s all in the wrist. Now let me put you to work; you need to cut the carrots, beans, sweet potatoes, and red peppers so that we have the vegetable part. And I’ll start cooking.” Soon, the smell of sautéing onions filled the kitchen.

As he was washing up the dishes after dinner, she removed the bowl of chocolate cake batter from the refrigerator and mixed it again before pouring it into ramekins. He splashed her with water.

“Hey, no water in the cake!” she said.

“You’re right. I’d better taste it to make sure it hasn’t been contaminated.” He reached for a clean spoon from the drying rack.

She grabbed his hand as he put the spoon into the bowl. “No previews!” She pushed his hand back, and chocolate sprayed inadvertently on his face.

“You know, this means war.” He wiped some chocolate off his face and smeared it on her.

She laughed and sprayed him with chocolate from her mixing spoon. They eyed each other warily, waiting for who was going to strike first with more chocolate. She jumped into his arms and kissed him, then licked the chocolate on his face. He laughed and his tongue licked the chocolate off her face.

“That tickles.” She shivered.

He hugged her tighter, and he held her gaze as he kissed her again.

The chocolate cake was eaten much, much later.

Good point, Audrey thought, as she read Colette’s legal analysis on a churning/fraud defense. The articles didn’t seem to be working, so the next step was praising each other. She typed out the following email.

To: Hunter Evans

From: Audrey Willems

CC: Colette Caron

Date: November 3

Subject: Colette’s Legal Analysis

Dear Hunter,

Colette found an insightful legal solution that will be critical to our defense of the fraud case. I wanted to make sure you saw it.

Best,

Audrey

An email popped up. The motion to dismiss in her case with Malaburn had been granted. She jumped out of her chair and did a happy dance.

“Yes!” She raised both arms in the air and shook them. She’d survived Malaburn, and this time, she hadn’t cried. Much.

Chapter Forty

To: Audrey Willems

From: Winnie Chu

Date: November 5

Subject: Mentors Found

Jae talked to those two executives at Global Capital who were on the panel, and they would be interested in meeting for lunch and talking about how they work together. (Yes, he’s a keeper!) He gave me their contact info.
