“Totally,” Jasmine said, laughing. Axl busted up and pointed at Izzy, who rubbed the left side of his forehead in embarrassment, covering half his face in the process.

“Who wants to go swimming?” he asked, kicking off his shoes.

Girl Sam turned so she was facing me and Boy Sam. “You know that trick where a volunteer has to pick a card, right?” We nodded. “He totally did that, but like, he couldn’t get the card right. He kept trying and trying, and all the other kids were laughing, and he just kept going like . . . like . . .”

“Spider-Man,” Axl said, cracking open a sparkling water and dumping half of it down his shirt when he drank it.

“What is it with you and spilling things?” Jasmine said, laughing.

“He needs a sippy cup,” Girl Sam said. To Izzy, she said, “I like that you keep on trying when things don’t work . . . just like Spider-Man.”

Jasmine and Boy Sam said, “Aww,” in unison, and Izzy’s face seemed like it might explode soon, and suddenly he threw off his life vest and shirt, took two steps backward, and dove into the lake.

“I guess he’s done with the game,” Boy Sam joked, making everyone else laugh.

“Can’t imagine why,” Kennedy said sarcastically, shaking the longer side of her hair out of her face and glancing at Seb. “It was pretty lame.”

Jasmine’s face fell; it’d been her idea.

“It was nice,” I said, too quietly, because everyone started talking about other things. I don’t think Jasmine heard me, and I didn’t know why Kennedy had been rude in the first place. I wondered if that was how she always acted around boys she thought were cute.

Axl, Jasmine, and the Sams decided to join Izzy, setting their plates aside. Kennedy stood up, too, taking off everything but her bikini, making me glad that Izzy was already in the water.

She asked Seb, “Are you coming?”

“A captain never leaves his ship,” he said, patting the dashboard of the driver’s station.

Kennedy shrugged and jumped into the water, screaming when she surfaced, the sound bouncing off the hills around us. “It’s fricken freezing! Thanks for the warning, jerks!”

Izzy laughed before diving under the water. When he came up, he told Jake to toss him a donut pool float. One by one, people splashed off the back of the boat except me, Jake, and Seb.

“Cribbage?” Seb asked Jake.

“Definitely,” Jake replied.

They got out a narrow wooden board with a bunch of holes in it and set it up on top of the cooler. I went to the front of the boat and sat down in the space where there was a break in the railing, my bare feet dangling over the side.

His torso through the center of the rainbow sprinkle donut, Izzy paddled over.

“What’s up?” He smiled brightly, his curls soaked and dripping. He looked adorable.
