  65. About the Authors

‘Ahaana seems to want to say so much to me when I see her. But I can’t meet her unblinking gaze. I can’t bring her Papa back. In moments like these, you realize how small and powerless we are in the face of matters of life and death.

‘She may no longer be able to speak, but I know what she wants to tell me. Ahaana wants me to go after those who took her Papa away. Ahaana and the loved ones of all those who died or were injured in the March 1993 blasts, orchestrated by Dawood and his friends in the ISI, want revenge.’

Somaiya paused and looked at each of the boys in turn. ‘Somebody needs to avenge Rana’s death for Ahaana… ’

Sahil glowered at Somaiya and attempted to say something but his words were inaudible. No one else uttered a word.

GIVING INDIA A ‘THOUSAND CUTS’

The next class picked up from where the last one had ended – the 1993 Bombay serial blasts. It all began with Atharv asking Somaiya for some ‘inside story’ related to the blasts’ conspiracy and their alleged orchestrators, Dawood Ibrahim, Tiger Memon and their ISI handlers. Somaiya said the blasts were the biggest acts of terror in India till 1993 and were the result of the ISI deciding to use mafia operatives to damage India.

‘In early December 1992, trouble was brewing over the issue of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. The mosque had been built, according to some historians, after demolishing a Ram temple that had stood on the same spot and where, legend says, Lord Ram was born. A section of right-wing leaders had been calling for the destruction of the mosque and the building of a temple dedicated to Lord Ram. After months of mobilization of popular support and resources, matters came to a head and got out of hand, and the Babri Masjid was destroyed by kar sevaks. The law of the land was violated,’ Somaiya began the day’s lecture.

‘For Pakistan, the demolition of the mosque was a golden opportunity to inflame, radicalize, recruit and train young Indian men for terror attacks in the name of revenge. For some time, the Pakistani terror machinery had been baying for new frontiers in the proxy war it was waging against India, especially as their efforts to create a movement for a separate Sikh state, Khalistan, were not meeting with the desired success.
