He winced, which was answer enough. “There’s no way you can drive five miles on that.”

“Yeah, they’re in pretty bad shape.” I squirmed, clutching the handle of my purse tighter.

“You have everything you need?” he asked, tipping his chin at the back of the car. It was completely empty since I’d intended to fill it up with the chairs I was on my way to pick up. I looked at my watch and saw that I technically still had time to get there, if only...

“I do,” I told him extra sweetly, tapping my purse for effect. It was now or never. “Listen, I know you’ve already done me a super big solid today, but I might need another teeny favor.” I held up my index finger and thumb a millimeter apart. He clenched his jaw but nodded.

“The thing is,” I hedged, and his mouth flattened in a very unamused expression. “I was on my way to pick up these two vintage chairs from a woman that’s selling them for basically nothing.”

“Where?” he bit out, and I was so close to telling him to fuck off in his big dumb car. Instead I mustered up another smile and got a little closer because I don’t care how pissed he looked now, I had empirical evidence of the effect my boobs had on him.

“It’s like another fifteen miles south.” He scowled with his hands on his hips. He looked so damn hot it was a real struggle to stay on task. “But it shouldn’t take more than ten minutes to get them.”

“You’re a real pain in the ass, Alba,” he growled, then sighed before turning back to the Tesla. “Lock up the car, and let’s go.” I gulped down the snide comment itching to come out of my mouth.

“I need to leave the key for the tow truck.” That I delivered in a more smart-ass tone than was advisable.

“Fine. Leave it in the glove compartment and tell your tow company not to bother coming, I already contacted my service and they’ll be here in the next half hour.”

“You did what?”

He pinched the bridge of his nose like I was plucking at his last nerve.

“I pay for a service with a concierge who takes care of this kind of thing. It’s quicker and they’ll bring the car back to our building afterward.” I didn’t know why him being nice to me annoyed me as much as it did, but I was pissed.

“I already had it taken care of.”

“Yeah, your plan worked great.”

“You don’t need to be an asshole, Theo.”
