“Girl, you are not lying,” I concurred, watching the man that merely hours before had literally had me in the kitchen playing with the daughter of one of the foundation staff.

“I’m not even invested in the man like that, but when he put that kid on his shoulder and pretended to be a horse, I almost texted Rocco and asked him to leave work early.”

It figured the universe would throw this little tableau into the mindfuck smoothie that was my brain. I was still trying to get back on solid emotional ground after last night and this morning. Sex with Theo was not what I’d expected. Not that I thought he would be a bad lover, he was too much of a perfectionist not to deliver in the orgasm department. What I had not expected was how he’d manage to give me such intense pleasure all while making me laugh. Then there was the way he’d wanted to keep me close. His demand that I stay in his bed. It was all too fucking much, and the last thing I needed was to watch him be all sweet and playful with a baby.

“I thought he’d be all touchy and shit since you let him pet the kitty after the pool party.” Julia said it so quietly I almost missed it, then punched her on the shoulder.

“I’m going to stop telling you stuff!” In a post-orgasmic moment of weakness this morning I’d texted her and confessed to what I’d gotten up to with my former boss. I should’ve known she was going to have her fun with me.

“What? What did I do?” She widened her eyes dramatically and pivoted her head left and right.

“I honestly can’t stand you.”

Julia just laughed at me. “Hey, it’s my job as your best friend to tease you a little when you get up close and personal with the D.” She crossed her arms over her shoulder, and assessed me. All business now. “Besides, what the big deal? You said you were both being super casual and doing the postmodern booty-call thing.”

That’s what I thought too, before he’d come out of his room looking like sex in faded jeans, made me coffee, asked me about my favorite books then fingered me against the kitchen island.

“I was kidding myself,” I confessed. “That man is much too dangerous to play games with, Julia. I think I need to quit while I’m ahead.”

My best friend scoffed, her attention on the man in question. “Alba, Theo is hot, accessible and, as you’ve been recently made aware of, a demon between the sheets, why on earth would you cut things off when you’ve only had a sample?”

Because he’s already making my head a mess and it will only get worse.
