  58. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“We’re not going to find her, are we?” I asked, voice shaky.

“She could be anywhere by now.”

“I’m sorry,” Seth said. He had chewed on his lip so much that it was bitten raw by now. “I really thought this was it. It’s just

. . . in the novels, there’s always some kind of clue, a witness.

Something more than this.”

“It’s not your fault,” I murmured. “It was dumb to think we could solve this ourselves.”

Seth shook his head, frustrated. “For someone who has spent so much time watching true crime cases, you would think I had a better grasp of what to actually do when something like this happens.”

“Stop,” Jasper suddenly said, making both of us turn around in our seats. “I know you like to talk down about yourself, Seth, but now’s not the time for that. You already brought us this far. Somewhere in that brilliant brain of yours there must be another idea.”

Seth looked down at his hands, swallowing. I could practically see the wheels spinning in his head as he thought thought thought until suddenly, he turned to me and asked, “Evelyn . . . on the phone, Noelle was suddenly talking about Wuthering Heights.

Do you remember what she asked you?”

“She asked if I remembered the afternoon when we studied in the library together.”

“Right. And then?”

“She . . . she talked about how I couldn’t remember where it was set.” My chest constricted when I thought back to that afternoon, of her smile against my lips and the warmth I had felt then, with the rain pattering against the windows and her hands cupping my face. Quietly, I added, “I thought it was set in Gloucestershire when it’s actually set in Yorkshire.”

Seth’s eyes widened. “Noelle couldn’t care less about classic literature. She was trying to give us a clue.”

“You think she’s being taken to Yorkshire or Gloucestershire?”

Jasper asked. He was leaning forward, his arms braced on the back of our seats.

“Gloucestershire,” Seth said, already getting out his phone.

“She said something like Remember when you didn’t know it was set in Yorkshire. She wouldn’t say the name of the place out loud in front of him, that would be stupid. She knew that only Evelyn knew what the other place is.”

My heart started racing as I watched him type, the flame in my chest rekindled. “But Gloucestershire is still big. Do you have any idea where—”

“Gloucestershire Airport.” Seth held up his phone. “I’ve heard of it before. It’s used for private aircraft; chartering private jets or helicopters, that kind of thing. If he wants to get her as far as possible as quickly as possible, that’s where he would take her.”

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“No.” He put the car in reverse. “But it’s the only idea I have.”

“Jesus,” Jasper breathed. “You’re brilliant.”

A moment later, we were racing through the night again.

Gloucestershire wasn’t too far, only roughly ninety minutes. At Seth’s speed, I was sure we could make it in seventy. Still, they were seventy minutes of wondering and worrying. None of us talked much, the silence disturbed only by the monotone directions that Seth’s mobile gave.
