"I came back," he said, slightly out of breath. He
pulled out a chair and sat down, stretching his long legs under the table. "I saw you were still here so I decided to come in. I felt like talking."
Jenny nodded and waited for him to start. But he kept quiet, so she picked up her burger again. "I can't help it," she said. "Fm starving."
*Tou don't have to explain," he told her. "Some people eat when they're upset."
"I know, but Fm not one of them. I just eat when Fm hungry. Not that Fm not upset," she added.
He leaned his elbows on the table and cupped his chin in his hands, watching her.
"Actually Fm feeling guilty," she went on. "I mean we were up there when Diana fell. I even heard her. Of course, I was busy worrying about my own situation, but afterward -- when I met up with you again -- that's what's bothering me."
'What do you mean?"
**Well, if I just hadn't ripped into you," Jenny said. "I was going to apologize to you for that, by the way," she added. "Anyway, if Fd just insisted that somebody was up there, then maybe Diana would have been found sooner. I know she still would have been hurt, but at least ..." Jenny heard herself running on and stopped. David still hadn't taken his eyes from her and she was beginning to feel unconifortable. "Anyway," she said again, '^that's what I was feeling."
"Guilty?"
Jenny nodded, not liking the sound of the word.
**Then you don^t think Dean was right?" he asked. *Tou don't think you imagined that shout?"
Jenny started to say no, and then changed her mind. Was he giving her a way out of feeling guilty? Even though it wasn't true, she decided to take it. "I guess I'll never be absolutely sure," she said.
"Maybe not." David leaned back, crossed his arms over his chest, and flashed a quick smile.
Jenny was glad he'd come, but she couldn't think of anything else to say. This was hardly the time for small talk, and besides, he was the one who said he felt like talking. She decided to keep quiet for a while and give him a chance.
Another quick smile lit up David's face, and then he said, 'What did you think of Diana?"
"I don't know her," Jenny reminded him with a little laugh. "I only met her that one time, before the scavenger hunt. Of course, she wasn't exactly friendly to me then, so I can't say I liked her. But like you said, she had something on her mind."
"Yeah, she did," he agreed with a frown. Jenny couldn't tell if the frown was because of Diana's bad mood, or because of his opinion of Diana. He'd never said how he felt about her. "And you didn't talk to her at all after that, while we were running around?"
"You know I didn't," she said, wondering what he was getting at. "You and I were together the whole time."
