The only time she'd seen him was on the night of the hunt. A big guy, with a round face and a swaggering walk. But not swaggering now, Jenny noticed. And his round face was filled with emotion.
Sally saw him next. She started to wave, but her hand stopped in mid air. "Something's wrong," she said. "Something terrible's happened."
"Sally, don't be so drama -- " Karen broke oS and stared at Brad.
Moving woodenly, he made his way over to them and grabbed hold of the back of Dean's chair.
"Diana," he said, and his voice broke. He took a deep breath. "Did you hear about Diana?"
"Sit down," Dean told him. He reached across the aisle and dragged over an empty chair. Brad slumped into it and leaned his head in his hands. **They found her. Yesterday," he said.
"Found her?" Karen asked. "You sound like she's dead or something."
Brad shook his head. "In a coma."
*What happened?" Sally breathed.
Brad looked up, and Jenny saw that his green eyes were bloodshot. "A couple of climbers found her on the rimrocks. She was unconscious and her head was all -- " his deep voice cracked. "She fell."
No one said anything for a moment, least of all Jenny. Her nightmare had come true. For Diana. As she sat there, the cool, comfortable interior of the diner faded, and she was back on the bluff, the thunder rolling and the lightning crackling around her. She saw herself yelling for David, and then she remembered the scream she thought she'd heard. She came back to reality with a jolt.
"I can't believe it!" Karen was saying. "I think I was the last one to see her. We'd been with you, Dean, remember? And then you went off to try to find a zither. And Diana -- she was in a really foul mood -- said she was going home."
"Yeah, well she must have changed her mind," Brad said. 'When was that, Karen?"
"I don't know. About a half hour or so before the storm."
"Gee, she went up on the bluff alone?" Sally said. **What a dumb . . . never mind."
"She wasn't the only one to go up there, remember?" Dean said. He looked at David. "She must have screamed when she fell. It's amazing nobody heard her."
"I might..." Jenny cleared her throat. "I might have heard her."
She'd spoken softly, but no one missed it. They stared as if she'd shouted. David didn't look surprised, naturally. But she noticed that his eyes narrowed arid didn't move from her face.
Brad leaned forward tensely. **What do you mean?"
**Well, I'm not sure if I'm right,'* Jenny said. "I mean, I. . . David and I got caught up there in the storm and -- "
"Yeah, okay," Brad said impatiently. "Just tell us what you heard."
Jenny closed her eyes in concentration. "I'd just shouted for David, and then ..."
"I thought you were together," Sally said.
