Words are always the result of encounters and clashes, hours of silence and deafening noise. The words in this book were generated in a garage. And I don’t mean in a figurative sense. The stories, the lists, the ideas were born to the sound of flooded engines in need of repair, spurts of water to hose away grease and oil, and bursts of air for inflating tires. Our editorial office was literally in a car wash, on the first floor of a garage in Milan where, for security reasons, we were virtually locked up.

My thanks to everyone who worked with me on the original TV programme, who defended it from the start, and to Loris Mazzetti, who paid for his efforts to keep us on the air by being handed a suspension. My thanks to Roberto Benigni, who was the first to support this project. My thanks to all the guests who experienced this adventure with me.

My thanks to the prosecutors, and to the Carabinieri Territorial Group in Locride, for guiding me through a very beautiful and terrifying land.

My thanks, as always, to those who have been watching over my life for years now, the fourteen men who make up my guard detail: Gaetano, Roberto, Claudio, Nicolò, Giuseppe, Rosario, Giuliano, Vittorio and others, who agreed to spend a long time away from home, with a smile and with a great deal of discipline, in support of my work.

My thanks to everyone who made the realization of this project possible; listing them all would be challenging, since they are truly so numerous. And to those who remained close to me through the most difficult times. Thanks to my English publisher, who believes in me and my work. Thanks to Anne Appel, who made my words yours.

And thanks to my family, who are subjected to pressure, isolation and suffering, but endure it.
