“I bet it makes giving directions easy.”
“It really does.” She was quiet for a bit. Then she glanced his way. “I think you and Sam will hit it off.”
“We already did when we met at the…” He hesitated, not wanting to mention the flood and ruin her good mood.
“It’s all right. You can say it—at the flood. I’ve moved on and am looking forward to the grand opening. Everything is starting to come together, thanks to you and the estate sale. We found some great pieces that should add some character to the bakery.”
He was relieved to hear her so upbeat. “Yes, we did.” He thought of her drawings in her notebook. “Is it okay that it won’t look exactly like you imagined?”
She nodded. “It’s going to look better.”
He suddenly felt some serious pressure to get this remodel just right. He swallowed hard. “Don’t get your hopes up too high.”
She glanced over at him. “Are you worried you aren’t up to it?”
She was daring him? Him? He was never one to turn down a challenge, whether it was on an obstacle course or a marathon. He was always pushing himself to do things better and faster.
“Not at all. Let’s do this.” The words were uttered before he realized he was only succeeding in raising her hopes and if he didn’t pull it off, she’d be crushed again. And this time, it would be all his fault.
“Don’t look so worried.” She sent him a reassuring smile. “I know you can do it.”
Not wanting to think of the bare walls and floors awaiting him back at the bakery, he turned his thoughts back to their adventure on this sunny spring day. “So this farm we’re going to, is it big?”
Hannah nodded. “It used to belong to my grandparents. Now my brother and his daughter live there.”
Ethan wondered how her niece’s mother had died, but he didn’t want to overstep. Instead he went in another direction. “Who’d have thought a small island like this would have a farm on it?”
“The majority of the island is farm land.”
“And beautiful land it is.” He gazed out at the Atlantic as the two-lane road snaked its way closer to the shoreline.
“I totally agree. And so do a bunch of vacationers who return here year after year.”
They rode along in the warm sunshine. And then he heard something. He listened closer. It was then he noticed it was Hannah and she was humming. The sound was catchy.
“What’s that you’re humming?”
She glanced over at him. “Oh. Sorry.”
“No. I like it. Really.”
Her cheeks pinkened. “There was a song on the radio this morning, and now I can’t stop the lyrics from playing over and over in my mind.”
He nodded in understanding, though he could honestly say he’d never had a song stuck in his head. He actually preferred silence when he was working. “Don’t stop on my account. I liked it.”
