But now post-accident him was finding that obligations didn’t have to consume every minute of every day. There was time to enjoy life—to enjoy his time with Hannah.
There was one catch. On this Sunday morning, Hannah was planning to ride her bike to the farm. He hadn’t ridden a bicycle in years.
Ethan had worried he wouldn’t remember how to do it. But it appeared the saying about riding a bike is true, he picked it up right away. And thanks to Greg, he was able to borrow his bike in order to accompany Hannah to the farm.
The sun shone brightly overhead, drying up the dampness from the showers overnight. Ethan pedaled around on the road in front of the bakery, missing the puddles as he waited for Hannah to join him.
Who’d have thought a small New England island would have a farm, but it actually had more than one farm. The farms surrounded the town of Bluestar with a lighthouse at each end of the crescent-shaped island.
He learned all of this from the informational pamphlet at the visitor’s center by the dock. You had to do something while waiting for the ferry, and so he read the pamphlets they offered tourists.
Speaking of waiting, it was time to leave. What was taking Hannah so long?
And then as though his thoughts had conjured her up, Hannah came around the side of the building with her perky pink bike. By the smile on her face, she either loved riding her bike or she was anxious to see her family. Probably it was a bit of both. But there was a part of him that wished the brilliant smile lighting up her eyes was all for him.
“Are you ready to go?” he asked.
“Of course.” She took off on her bike. “I thought you were never going to get here,” she called over her shoulder.
Wait. What? He took off after her, easily catching up to her. “I was the one waiting for you.”
“No. You’re the one that had to drop Peaches off at Betty’s and then go to Greg’s place to borrow his bike. And while you were gone, I was able to get the last judge we needed for the Bloomin’ Tulip Contest.”
“That’s great, who did you get?”
“The pastor’s wife. She was more than willing to do it.”
“Good. But I’ve been out here riding around in circles waiting for you.”
“I had to wait first. You were gone so long that I got distracted with your project.” Hannah led the way south out of town. She pedaled along at a modest pace. “You were gone forever.”
He kept pace with her as he consulted his fitness watch. “I was only gone fifteen minutes, sixteen tops.”
She sent him an impish smile. “More like a half hour.” She flashed him a teasing smile. “Here’s a bit of Bluestar trivia—this is the main road that stretches from the northern tip of the island to the southernmost point.”
