They were done.
She blew out a sigh.
Hours later, Hannah placed the last colored egg in the crate to dry. It was after lunch now and the baskets still had to be delivered to Sunny Days.
She glanced across the table to Ethan. His hands were stained in a rainbow of colors. “It looks like you got more dye on you than on the eggs.”
He looked at his hands. “At least they’re festive now.”
She smiled and shook her head. “Yes, they are.”
“Your fingers don’t look much better.”
“I couldn’t let you be the only one with rainbow hands. Now we better get the baskets put together. I have some cookies Nikki helped me bake last night to put in the baskets.”
“You baked last night?”
She nodded as she rushed to the living room to get the plastic containers of cookies. “I thought I’d put a personal touch in the baskets.”
“And dyed eggs aren’t personal enough?”
“But you know I’m a baker.” She opened the top container to let him see the egg and bunny shaped cookies.
“They look great. But when do you relax?”
“This from a man who spends every waking hour working on the remodel.”
“Not every hour.”
“Close enough. What you don’t understand is that when I’m not on a tight deadline, baking is relaxing for me.”
“What I know is that you’re forever doing things for others.” He sent her a smile that touched his warm brown eyes. “You’re very special.”
As he stared into her eyes, her heart pitter-pattered. She should turn away, but she was so drawn to him. And suddenly it felt like they were the only two people in the world.
The breath caught in her lungs. She hoped he would kiss her. At last. In that moment, she realized her aversion to his job hadn’t diminished the spark between them. What did that mean for the future?
“Watch out—!”
She glanced down to see the cookie container was tipping to the side. “Oops.”
He moved the cookies to the counter. “All taken care of.”
She thought the moment had passed when Ethan stepped up to her again. “Hannah, I want to thank you.”
“For what?”
“Being so good to me and my aunt. Without you none of this would have come together—at least not the way it’s supposed to—not the way the Bluestar residents are expecting.”
Heat inched up her neck and settled in her cheeks. “I just did what needed to be done.”
“No.” He gazed deep into her eyes. “You went above and beyond. You’re amazing.”
Their gazes caught and held much longer than was appropriate. Words clogged her throat. And all she could do was stand there totally lost in his chocolatey gaze.
He reached out to her. The back of his fingers lightly grazed her cheek. “I should stop now. I should walk away. But there’s something special about you—between us. Hannah, I—”
