“There’s still time. Don’t give up hope.”
She sighed again. The dimness in her eyes let him know she had given up. “We need to get busy.”
Maybe staying busy would keep them both from worrying about completing the bakery. “Yes, let’s get to work.”
Hannah unloaded the candy bags onto the table. “I got these for the baskets. Hey, did you fertilize your aunt’s tulips?”
He nodded. “I did it just the way she wanted. I even switched brands of coffee I drink so it’d be the right grounds.”
“That was so sweet of you. And what about the prizes?”
He smiled and nodded. “I took care of them last week.”
“Awesome. I think everything is on track for tomorrow. Oh no!”
Ethan rushed over to her. His gaze searched her and then the table. “What’s wrong? What happened?”
She let out a soft laugh. “Nothing. I mean I was worried I jinxed the festival when I said that everything is under control.”
“That’s all?” When she nodded, he said, “Then knock on wood.”
She smiled and then rapped her knuckles on the wooden kitchen table. “Problem solved.”
“Okay. Hopefully this won’t take too long. When I saw Aunt Birdie yesterday, she said she had all of the dyes we’d need in her pantry. She’d also ordered the eggs and arranged to have them delivered this morning. I didn’t think the local grocery store delivered food.”
Hannah had her back to him as she stood on a stepstool, searching through the kitchen cabinets. “I don’t think he delivers for anyone but your aunt. She has a way of getting people to do things.”
“Tell me about it.”
Ding. Dong.
“Looks like the eggs are here.” Hannah closed the upper cabinet doors. Was that a joyful lilt in her voice? Surely not.
“I’ll go get them.” He headed for the front door.
“And I found the vinegar.”
When he opened the front door, he was shocked to find a man standing there with a dolly loaded with two big boxes of eggs. Wait. Boxes of eggs? What in the world?
“I think there’s been some sort of mistake.”
The older man checked the paper attached to the clipboard. “Nope. It says two boxes of eggs.”
This just can’t be right. There’s no way.
“Hannah?” He moved aside as the man rolled the eggs into the house. “Hannah! Hurry!”
She stepped out of the kitchen. “What’s wrong?”
“There’s a mistake with the order.” He planted his hands on his waist. “We can’t color all of those eggs.”
Her gaze moved from him to the cases of eggs. “Two hundred eggs. Yes, that’s right. We need them to take to the residents of Sunny Days. It was your aunt’s idea.”
The older man sent her a relieved smile.
Ethan did what he was told and moved the eggs to the kitchen. Hannah placed eggs in the bottom of pots and covered them with water. When she was done, each burner on the stove was filled. This was not going to be the short endeavor that he’d hoped. Luckily some of the fire crew were at the bakery keeping things going there.
