I’ve spent quite a lot of time in hospitals one way and another over the last few months, and have developed a huge respect for the work that goes on in them. Sitting in the main reception, you see all of life passing you by, from expectant mothers and excited families with balloons to welcome newborns, to those nearing the end of their lives and everything in between. Setting a book in one proved to be quite a challenge though, so I want to say a particular thank you to Ally, for all the insights she gave me into the duties of an A & E nurse, and Caroline, who was so helpful on some of the other aspects of nursing.

Maisie and Nina, thank you so much for spending time with me and giving me such valuable insights into life with dyslexia. I also want to thank Michael, who was able to communicate his passion for flying remote-controlled helicopters so brilliantly, while being honest about some of the rivalries between the different groups. I hope I’ve captured all of these things faithfully.
