Chapters (30)
“Of course I do.” He closes the final distance between us. “We’ve both dealt with some shit, Sadie. Traumatic shit that doesn’t just go away. But I want to be with you. I love you.” He cups my cheek with his free hand.
I turn my head, placing a soft kiss on his palm, before leaning in and pressing my lips to his. “I feel like this was too easy. Shouldn’t I’ve had to write out an apology with a skywriter or put up a message on the scoreboard at Yankee Stadium or something?”
“Please don’t ever do either one of those.” His mouth moves to the side of my neck. “But if you need a grand gesture, I’m happy to comply.”
“How about Chinese food and Bravo?” I turn my head once again, this time capturing his mouth with mine.
“You drive a hard bargain, sweet pea.”
“But there’s something I want to do first.” I gently push him away.
“Name it.”
“Let’s go for a walk. We can grab food on our way home.” I stand, heading upstairs to change quickly. I reheat my coffee before we head out but end up grabbing a second latte at a café we stroll by, one I haven’t been to before.
We wander for the better part of the afternoon, raiding small vintage shops and a couple of sidewalk sales for stuff I can use in the shop. The shop I have to at least peek my head into, even though we’re officially closed, almost to remind myself it’s still there and will be for quite some time. We have margaritas during happy hour and ice cream before dinner. On our way back to the brownstone, we pick up Chinese food to go.
I tuck myself into Jack’s side embrace as we head back. “Today’s been perfect, but not gonna lie, I’m excited to get home.”
Jack leans down, planting a kiss on the top of my head. “I’ve been home all day.”
I tilt my head up to meet his gorgeous green-eyed gaze.
He grins. “My home is you.”
Epilogue
I finish setting the last of the place cards early on Thanksgiving morning. Somehow we created a tradition, not that I’m at all mad about it, and the whole gang will be arriving at the brownstone in just a couple of hours. And the crew is even larger this year, with Nick’s parents joining us, along with Lucy and her brother, Jason, and Gemma’s new girlfriend. They met at the restaurant where Gem has been working since June, and it’s still pretty new, but she handles us well, so I hope she’ll stick around.
“Table looks great, sweet pea.” Jack wraps his arms around my waist from behind me, nuzzling into my neck.
