- About the Author
Sadie turned her glare on Jack. “She asked me not to leave her alone. I’m not leaving.”
“I’m not asking you to,” Jack told her evenly. “But you’re scaring Olivia. Take a step back.”
Sadie stepped back, her gaze going from feral to concerned when she turned to Olivia. “Sorry, sweetie. You okay?”
“I’m okay,” Olivia assured her, breathing a quiet sigh of relief when Sadie grabbed her hand again. “Thanks.”
“Anytime,” Sadie said with a meaningful look at Kyle.
Jack cleared his throat. It was hard to tell with the thick beard, but he looked like he was trying not to smile. “Kyle. We haven’t seen you around in a while.”
Kyle gave Jack a short nod. “Jack.”
“Come on out to the bar. I’ll buy you a drink.”
“I appreciate that,” Kyle said, flicking his gaze back to Olivia. “But I need to talk to Liv.”
“That’s not going to happen, Kyle,” Jack told him, his gaze steady.
“Please,” Kyle said, still watching her. “Five minutes.”
“Listen, motherfucker—” Sadie began, but stopped when Olivia squeezed her hand.
“I’ll talk to you,” she told him. “But I want Cade here.”
Kyle hesitated, then nodded. “All right.”
Olivia turned to Jack, who was frowning at her. “Do you know where he is?”
“He’s still helping James.” His gaze flicked to Sadie. “I don’t suppose you’d be willing to go get him.”
“I don’t suppose.”
“Fine.” He slipped a small two-way radio from his belt. Cell phones were banned in the play space, but all the DMs carried a radio in case they needed to call for help. He stepped away and spoke quietly into it, keeping one eye on Sadie. When the radio crackled, he slipped it onto his belt and came back. “Kody will find him and let him know.”
“Thank you.”
“No problem.”
The four of them fell silent as they waited. It wasn’t exactly an awkward silence, but it wasn’t comfortable either. Sadie was glaring at Kyle, Kyle was looking at Olivia, and Jack was looking at Sadie with exasperation tinged with amusement.
“Sadie, stop glaring at Kyle,” he said.
“I’ll stop glaring at him when he stops glaring at Olivia,” Sadie countered.
“I’m not glaring at her. I’m looking at her,” Kyle muttered, his face twisted with annoyance.
“Stop looking at her, then.”
“Where do you want me to look?” Kyle snapped.
“Up your ass,” Sadie shot back. “Maybe you’ll find your brains up there.”
“Jesus,” Jack muttered, and this time Olivia was sure he was smiling. “Sadie, give it a rest.”
“It’s fine,” Olivia told her, trying not to laugh, and sighed with relief when Cade came through the door.
“Thank God,” Jack said, and took a step back. “Sadie.”
“What? I told you, I’m not leaving.”
“It’s okay,” Olivia whispered as Cade reached them. “I’m covered.”
