Logan walked over to the window, looked out at the twilight pouring over the mountain. “I believe him,” He turned to look at them. “I pulled his jacket—Navy doc, served with honors before going on to get his degree in contagions. He was appointed by Jackson, but he’s personal friends with White, so she might have done it to get on White’s good side. He’s been to White’s ranch in Montana several times. And, Isaac personally vouched for him. Is even attending a worldwide security summit with him in Germany in a few weeks.”

“You sure that’s a good idea, boss?” Roy said.

“I need more information before I advise the president to pull out of an international summit, but no, I’m not sure.”

He turned to RJ. “Are you sure this is a good idea?”

Why was he asking her? She was the first to volunteer for hazard duty. He opened his mouth to object, but she answered for him.

“Not sure, no.” RJ looked at him.

Oh.

“But until we come up with something different, it’s all I have.” She turned to Logan. “And I trust you and Roy to figure out the best strategy.”

“What about York?”

She looked at him, then headed to the door. “He has plans.”

Then she winked at him and walked out.

Leaving York there to stare at Logan, nonplussed.

“Plans?”

York took a breath. “She—we—want to get married.”

Roy just stared at him.

A smile tweaked Logan’s face. “Finally.”

York shook his head. “I dunno. An hour ago, I thought this was a brilliant idea. Now…”

“York. If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, you’ll wait all your life. There will always be something.”

Right. Like a bounty on his head, or an international plot to destroy the world?

“Maybe I’m being morbid but what if we never get off this carousel and live a normal life.”

“Maybe this is normal life, for you. But more, who says we ever get to hop off the carousel? Life keeps turning, and sure, you might take a break, but the fact is, when we’re in the employ of the Lord, we get back on, keep fighting the good fight. And not everyone’s fight looks like ours, no, but the journey is a struggle for everyone. Life is not meant to be easy. It’s meant to be something that makes us cling to God.” He put a hand on York’s shoulder. “Go, get married. Roy and I got this.”

York considered him. “Nothing can happen to her. Nothing. Swear it.”

Logan gave him a look.

“I swear,” Roy said.

He let out a breath. “Okay. But can we even get married here? Don’t I need a license?”

“Yes, you do,” Roy said. “But Lauchtenland is like Gretna Green, in Scotland. It’s a marriage getaway. People from around the world come here to elope.”
