Chapters (18)
“It will work.” She refused to raise her voice, instead took a breath and turned it low. “I’ve been over and over this, looking at the trajectories, the angles, the what-ifs—York survived that fall. I know it in my bones. And now he wants me to confirm his death and follow the money trail when the assassin gets paid.”
Ziggy raised an eyebrow, her mouth a grim line. But she nodded.
Roy cupped his good hand behind his neck, kneaded a muscle there.
“It’s worth a try. Even if he’s…” Her eyes burned but she blinked the moisture away. “Even if I’m wrong, we find the person who…”
“Who is behind his murder,” Ziggy said quietly.
RJ looked away.
The sky was still mottled and gray from the storm, although it had started to die, and through a fissure in the clouds, the sun had broken through. The air smelled of summer, and in that heartbeat, she was in the turret, the wind playing with the curtains at the windows, York in her arms, his breath in her ear.
“We will live happily ever after, RJ. Trust me.”
She did trust him.
And he trusted her.
“Are you with me, or do I have to do this alone?”
Ziggy considered her. Then smiled and held out her fist.
Roy sighed. But also held his out.
She bumped them both. “Good. Because this story isn’t over. Not by a long shot. Now, I’m going to need some fresh coffee.”
