Chapters (18)
“Yes.” Logan said. “And so are you.”
“Same mission objectives?” York asked. “Find and detain Grey?”
“And protect him. Until we sort out if he was the target, we need to assume the worst.”
“What should we do about Hana?” RJ asked, glancing at York. She didn’t know why, but the little girl seemed her—their—responsibility.
“My mother will watch her until you get back.”
Until they got back. York nodded, however, as if reading RJ’s mind. “We won’t be long.”
Huh. But she slid her hand into his under the table. He squeezed it.
Oh, she wanted to believe him.
Logan looked at Ziggy. “We could use your help, if you want to join us?”
Ziggy made a face, shook her head. “I’d like to, but I have my own mission.” She glanced at York. Nodded.
RJ frowned.
It bothered her so much that she cornered Ziggy just before she left, knocking on her bedroom door.
Ziggy was packing, her hair back in a dark braid, wearing her leggings, runners and an athletic shirt. “Where are you going? And what does it have to do with York?”
The woman zipped up her backpack. “York asked me to check on someone —”
“Someone connected with the bounty on his head?”
Ziggy’s mouth tightened.
Oh, she knew it.
Ziggy drew in a breath. “Any word from your contact?”
“Just that the contract went up on the dark web the day after we saw Martin in Paris. So, my bet is that Martin is the originator.”
Grabbing the backpack, Ziggy pulled it onto her shoulder. “I’m just going to ask some questions. I’ll let you know what I find out.”
“Even if York doesn’t?”
Ziggy stood at the door, her hand on the handle. “He still hasn’t told you any of the details?”
RJ shook her head.
“He’s probably trying to protect you.”
“And trying to protect himself.” She shook her head. “Please keep me in the loop.”
“You two are so alike,” Ziggy said. “Stay safe.” Ziggy headed out the door.
Ziggy’s words still clung to her six hours later when they touched down in Lauchtenland.
Maybe they were. York was passion and risk and courage. But he was also home and family and commitment.
Yes, it was time for them to get married.
Before, like Angel, she lost the man she loved.
Logan had rented a car for them, and they traveled the three hours north up the west coast of Lauchtenland, along highway one, past the old towns, mixed with new architecture. They passed Perrigwynn Palace, the royal residence of the House of Blue, and finally came to the hamlet of Dunholm, with old town facing the quay, off Centre Street, the newer part of town past a row of low buildings, and the Centre Park to the east. The beautiful Highcrest Mountains rose in the distance, green and lush.
