Roy stopped talking at RJ’s words. Logan looked up, into the rear-view mirror. His boss—about the same age as York, wore his brown hair clipped short, and a dress shirt, suit pants and tie, ever the representative of the president, although he’d loosened it a bit. And, he’d taken off his suitcoat and hung it on a hanger in the caravan.

“What is she right about?” Logan asked.

He’d once been a SEAL, served right alongside Roy and Hamilton Jones, so he was all about getting the mission objective accomplished, and it showed in his tone, the one on the phone and now as they drove back to the villa.

He was annoyed, frustrated and not a little panicked about Director Grey’s whereabouts. Or his affiliations.

“Coco reminded me of an explosion that went off in the hotel room of Senator Jackson during a campaign event in California. The bomb was activated by a radio frequency on a microphone Jackson was wearing. It didn’t go off until she was in proximity of the bomb—then the frequency armed the device and it went off a few minutes later.”

“Where was the bomb?”

“It was …I think a vase of flowers that was delivered to her room? I can’t remember.” She looked at York. “There were fresh flowers in my room. My guess is that all the rooms get fresh flowers every day.”

“The bomb is in the vase?” Ziggy said.

“Could be,” RJ said.

“But what triggered it?” York said.

“You still have that key card?”

York found it in his back pocket, handed it over. RJ took it, looked at it. “I dunno. It’s thicker than normal, and heavier. Almost metallic. I’d need to take it apart, maybe get an x-ray machine.”

“We can overnight it to Coco,” Logan said. “She can take it apart.”

“That came from Grey’s security team,” York said. “You think it’s an inside job?”

“Maybe they didn’t know?” Ziggy asked.

“Or maybe they were trying to dispose of the evidence.” This from Roy. He wore a grim look.

Ziggy pointed to the cut off driveway to the estate. It sat on the hilltop, bathed in a sort of late-afternoon rose-gold from the setting sun.

“This is beautiful,” Logan said.

York still hadn’t ruled out Winchester Marshall as a culprit. But as they drove into the courtyard, he spotted Winchester in the garden with Hana.

He stood up and waved, grinning.

They got out, and Tessa came out, wiping her hands on a bread towel. “I thought you guys were staying the night in Florence?”

“It’s a long story,” Roy said.

“I hope it’s okay that we brought a guest,” Ziggy said.

“Of course.”

York got out as Ziggy introduced Logan to her mother. Hana had filled a basket of tomatoes and came out, grinning at him. “Prevyet!”

He crouched in front of her, strangely happy to see her.
