She leaned forward. “Fine. Just tell me. Does he live?”

Ziggy raised an eyebrow.

“He has to come back to her. If he doesn’t…“ She drew in a breath. “Frankly, I don’t know what to root for—I hate that he’s leaving her, but if they’re found, then they all die. There are no good options.” She looked at Winchester. “You have to give them a happy ending, or the American audience will kill you. It can’t be another Somersby.”

“Oh, that movie,” Winchester shook his head. “I saw it when I was a kid, and my mother left the room sobbing. I don’t see the big deal. The guy chose honor —“

“He impersonated a criminal and was hung for it!” RJ said. “He should have told the truth, and let the shrapnel fall.”

“Then his wife would have lost everything, his child would have been illegitimate, and the land he’d given to the freed slaves rescinded.” Win leaned back. “Sometimes honor is the happy ending.”

“Hear, hear,” Santini said.

RJ looked at him. “Seriously?”

“Sure. Why do men go to war?”

“It might start out as honor,” York said quietly. “But in the end, it’s for the man—or woman—next to them. It’s for the sake of, well, love, I guess. Love for your fellow man, or again, woman.”

Tessa smiled at him. “Well said, York. Love, in the end, is the most powerful emotion made. Look at what God’s love did for us.”

He looked at her, then nodded, smiled. “Yes. Love is hope. Love is salvation.”

“Yeah, and love is truth. Which is what Jack Somersby should have done. Tell the truth instead of breaking all our hearts.” She turned to Hana, switched to Russian. “Okay, kiddo, let’s get to bed.”

Hana sighed but nodded.

“I’ll take her,” Tessa said and rose, holding out her hand.

Hana took it, smiled up at the woman.

“She’s come a long way from when we…I don’t know what to call it—rescued? Kidnapped her?”

“I think rescued is the term,” York said. “She told me that she was kept in a room at the hospital and that a doctor would come and visit her, take her blood, and that they would feed her, but it feels like they were doing some tests on her.”

“What kind of tests?” Roy asked.

“I don’t know. But I think it’s safe to say that Mads wasn’t her father. They were using her. The question is…why.”

“Mads certainly used her to trick me into going to Germany,” RJ said. “Any news on the whereabouts of Martin?”

York had told her about his meeting with Gregori—had simply left out a few details.

“No,” he said now. Truth—Gregori hadn’t called him. But the last thing York was going to do is alert the man to the fact he’d survived the attack.
