York had no comment, really, because once the fog of pain and fatigue started to clear, his brain returned to the events of the night before, trying to unravel how Gregori had found their hotel, set a tail on them so fast.

If it was even Gregori.

He didn’t know when Roy had placed a call, but the hospital hadn’t even discharged them before a woman arrived, calling Roy’s name in the ER.

“This is Ziggy,” Roy said, pushing himself up.

York noticed the look of horror she gave him, even as she delivered the typical Italian double-kiss greeting. She was pretty—dark hair, striking brown eyes, and dusky, tanned skin, lean, strong frame. High cheekbones, her hair pulled back in a thick ponytail.

Seemed exactly the kind of woman Roy might partner up with.

“And this is York,” she said, turning to him. “You’re exactly as RJ described you.”

The words were fire, burning through him. He didn’t want to ask for details, only, “she’s with you?”

“She’s at our villa. She’s safe. And just fine.”

He looked at Roy who nodded.

Okay, so breathe.

Ziggy leaned against the door frame, her arms folded over a pink tee-shirt, a pair of jeans, runners. “Okay, sum up. What happened to make you two look like you were in a road fight.”

“A road fight,” Roy said. Smiled.

She narrowed her eyes.

“A guy followed us from Berlin, threw a grenade into our car and tried to kill us.”

Her mouth opened. Then closed. She drew in a breath. “Okay, now I want it all.”

“We don’t know much,” Roy said. “York met with an old contact, thinking RJ had been taken by someone working for the Bratva. Asked him to nose around. Problem is, York here has a bounty on him. A million Euros.”

She gave a face of approval. “That might buy me a nice yacht.”

York looked at Roy, who glanced at him, lifted a shoulder. “She’s not wrong.”

He shook his head.

“So,” Ziggy said. “You think this guy had you tailed, and then tried to take you out for the cash?”

Roy nodded.

York shook his head.

“Really?” Roy said.

“I dunno. It’s just…yeah, Gregori would sell his own mother if he thought it would make him money, but…I didn’t see it in him. He knew there was a bounty on me—he could have had me tailed and taken the minute we left the park. Why set a tail on us, follow us to Rome? No, this was a for hire gig, and I don’t see Gregori reaching out to share.”

“Then who?” Ziggy asked.

The nurse came in with papers for them to sign.

Roy and York went through the discharge, then followed Ziggy out to a beautiful, BMW Touring wagon.

York opened up the door to the back seat before Roy could grab it and climbed in.
