“Hungry?”

Hana glanced at her, then the apple. Then back to RJ. Took a breath.

RJ moved it closer to her.

Hana took it, and then, holding it with both hands, dug in.

“I don’t know,” RJ said to Ziggy’s question. “Right now, I just want to find York and go home.”

The wind blew against the train, the clacking of the wheels rhythmic and hypnotic. The last time she’d been on a train, it had been with York, during their escape through Russia.

“He’ll find us,” Ziggy said. “Trust me. If York is anything like his reputation, he’ll find us.”

RJ frowned. “What is his reputation?”

“It’s just…well, they called him the Bird back when I was getting started. Not sure why, but some said because he was able to be everywhere. He just sort of showed up, right time, right place.”

RJ nodded. “He rescued me from being shot during an assassination attempt on a Russian General. Just - grabbed me right off the street. Kept me safe, got me out of the country.”

“He was a real Bond. At the top of his game when he met you.”

“And now he wants to settle down, start a family. Honestly, I didn’t believe it the first time he said it. He lost his memory a couple years ago, and got a taste of that life, but when it all came back to him, I thought he’d put it behind him. But now, maybe, I get it.”

“Nothing like an attempt on your life to make you want to hang up your gun.”

“I don’t have a gun. I learned how to shoot on the ranch—a little. But really, I have no training. Not in weapons, or hand-to-hand combat, or spycraft. I’m just…I’m just a normal person with a terrible ability to get in over my head.”

Ziggy pulled up her jacket and wadded it into a ball, then shoved it behind her neck, leaning against the window, away from her injured arm. “You don’t have to have special skills to be a hero. You just have to do what’s right, despite the cost.” She closed her eyes. “My great-grandfather taught me that. If it weren’t for his weaknesses, I wouldn’t even be here.”

“I thought you said he was a hero.”

“He was. Didn’t mean he didn’t make mistakes.”

Hana had finished the apple, had eaten it all the way down to the core, and then that, too.

Now, she lay on the bench, her knees to her chest, her head on her hands. Poor thing. RJ reached for the blanket on the top bunk and pulled it down. Then she spread it over the little girl.

Her eyes opened a moment, and she considered RJ.

Then, she flashed a smile, just one side of her mouth and pulled up the blanket.
