Alonzo’s eyes glittered as he stared down at the floor. This was no run-of-the-mill Staples safe. This safe was a one-of-a-kind custom-built job. Getting it open was going to be the challenge. “Mig, go online and find out the birthdays of the wife and kid. And Cricket’s, too. It’s a place to start. Now, show me the jewelry you have.”
Alonzo smiled. A nice, tidy haul. If he found a good fence, he and his boys could live for a little while on a haul like this.
“Pete, go in the garage and look for tools that will help us open up this puppy.”
Maybe things weren’t so dark after all.
Maybe.
He didn’t believe it for a minute.

Chapter 12
Lionel Lewis walked through the downpour as he made his nightly rounds of Happy Village. As a rule, he didn’t mind the rain, and he was dressed for it, with a hat and a big yellow poncho, along with knee-high Wellington boots. It wasn’t often in Vegas that it rained the way it was now, and that’s why it didn’t really bother him. He let his mind search for a word to define what he felt. Refreshing. Yep, that was it.
What was bothering him was what he wasn’t feeling. He knew every inch of Happy Village, knew every flower bed, every pothole, every loose brick. He knew where to step and where not to step. He knew where everyone was on any given night because he took his job seriously. He saw now that the little dip at the end of Primrose Avenue could vie for lake status. He moved to the right to avoid a twisted ankle as he stared ahead at Sid Donaldson’s porch light. Sid never left his porch light on past nine-thirty, and it was now one in the morning.
Lionel made his way up to the stoop that led to a three-rocker front porch and looked in the window. Sid was sprawled on the sofa, with his calico cat, Piper, sleeping on his broad chest. Lionel sucked in his breath as he automatically crossed his fingers that Sid was just sleeping. He watched, but the man didn’t move. He tapped lightly on the window. The cat jumped down and ran off. Lionel waited to see if Sid would move. He did. Lionel thought he would faint in relief. He moved off to finish his patrol.
